Day 9 Himba Tribes

We visit a Himba community close to Kamanjab where you will have an opportunity to interact with the people who live there. This is a working village and is only a representation of a larger group of nomadic pastoralists. The semi-nomadic Himba people are extremely susceptible to Western influence and have lost a large portion of their land to farmers, engineers, miners and many were displaced during the wars that raged in Angola. The dwindling number of pastoralists that still exist in their natural environment are protected as far as possible by creating a “buffer zone”, or an “educational tribe” where tourists who would like to get a better understanding of the way of the Himba, their lifestyle and their traditions, can do so without interfering with those still living in their natural environment.

Visiting the Himba tribe can be a controversial topic that gets discussed at the camp fire, however not so much if the reason for visiting this particular tribe is understood beforehand.  The income that this specific tribe generates from the visits goes towards the education of orphaned Himba children and assists the tribe in giving them a chance to learn about their own culture and heritage.  There is a market at the end of your visit, this is a way for the women to establish a small income, used for their own private expenses, and it is up to you whether you’d like to purchase anything or not.

Although we will do our best at all times to ensure that the tour remains on schedule we want to make it very clear that this is not always possible. There is always something unexpected on a tour, sometimes the truck gets stuck in mud, or sand, sometimes it rains… Anything can happen, but nothing that a good sense of humour cannot overcome.

Yes! Make sure your insurance covers being airlifted in case of serious illness/injury as good hospital facilities are often a long way from where our tours travel. Free credit card insurance is often insufficient, so a separate policy is recommended. As travel insurance is compulsory, you will be asked for the policy number before being allowed to board our vehicle.

On a camping tour your participation in camp chores is limited: taking turns to assist with washing-up duties, putting up and taking down your tent and loading your bags. On some of our accommodated tours we include a camp assistant.

You are responsible for your own visas. Please check the itinerary of your tour carefully and if you need a multiple entry visa be sure to get one. Your passport needs to be valid for 6 months after your departure date from Africa and you must have at least 3-4 blank pages available. Accommodation

Meals during these weeks are included. The food is traditional Balinese for 3 meals/day on weekdays, weekends (2 meals/ day)

All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

All accommodation is provided during the programme, in shared guesthouses in the village of Penestanan Kaja, about 20 minutes walk from Ubud town. This rural, unspoilt village is set off the tourist track, surrounded by rice paddies. The village offers a true cultural immersion into the Balinese way of life.

You will be staying in traditional Balinese compounds in their own shared houses but will be living alongside homes lived in by local families. It’s an authentic way to experience Balinese culture and meet the friendly local people.

Each house is mixed sex and provides accommodation for to up to 10 people, in single-sex dorm rooms sleeping between 4-8 per room. The accommodation is basic but comfortable with bunkbeds and a fan in each room. There is also a communal area and a basic shared kitchen with a fridge in each house. There are mosquito screens at the windows but individual mosquito nets are not provided in the accommodation so you may want to bring one with you. A local laundry service is available for USD5 per load.

Bathrooms are shared and have western toilets and hot water.  You also have use of a nearby guesthouse pool for a small charge of around £1.50.

The accommodation compounds are very safe, and local men keep a round-the-clock eye on who is entering the compound. There are no locks on the bedroom doors so we recommend you bring a padlock with you to lock your suitcase. You should also bring a torch with you to find your way around after dark as there are no street lights in the village. Please note: There is a 10.30pm curfew at the volunteer houses.

There are two local cafes in the village which offer internet access and are also a good place to relax with a snack or a drink. The local shop sells snacks and bottled water. A good selection of shops, pharmacies and places to eat and drink are available in Ubud, which is a twenty minute walk from the village. There is also a medical centre in Ubud as well as ATMs (please note there is no ATM in Penestanan Kaja).

Meals

Three meals a day are included on weekdays and 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) at the weekends (apart from your arrival day, Sunday – no meals are included on this first Sunday). All food is prepared for you. Indonesian food is delicious and diverse, and typical dishes include sate ayam (chicken or pork skewers with satay sauce), mie goreng (fried noodles and vegetables), nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables) or gado gado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce). For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soy beans). Other dietary requirements may be catered for if informed in advance.

Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, cereal and toast. Purified water is available in the volunteer house and we do not recommend that you drink the tap water. There is a café that serves western-style food close to the accommodation. There are also plenty of local restaurants and cafes in Ubud.

Please note: As you will be living in close proximity to local families, alcohol is not permitted in the volunteer houses.

Arrival Details

You should arrange your arrival into Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar International Airport) in Bali on a Sunday. Transfers are available if you arrive between the hours of 6.00am and 6.00pm.

When you arrive you will need to go to the visa desk and obtain your 30-day visa (you will need to have USD25 in cash with you to pay for this). It may take a little time for you to get through customs. You will be met in the arrivals hall by a representative and driven to your accommodation in the village of Penestanan Kaja. Itinerary

Below is an itinerary for the current season. Currently we offer weekly departures on Saturdays departing from 7 November 2015

Note: Given the spontaneous nature of our trips, what we do each day might occasionally vary. The cost of accommodation is not included in your travel pass to allow you the flexibility to choose your own; however, en route we do recommended accommodation, which is an affordable mid-range choice. Your Tour Leader will make reservations for the group daily for accommodation and activities based on your preferences.

Mingalabar (hello) and welcome to Myanmar, Southeast Asia’s largest mainland country. Arriving in the capital city of Yangon, prepare for an intriguing mix of British colonial history and tastes from neighbouring India that distinguishes Myanmar from other Southeast Asian countries. Take some time to soak up these multicultural influences by wandering the markets and buzzing street life before meeting your Tour Leader in the early evening. Tonight you will meet your ‘travel buddies’ and prepare for the journey ahead, before heading out to local hot spot, 19th Street, to sample some tasty Burmese street food washed down with a nice cold Myanmar Beer at one of the many popular beer stations.

Fere Day Yangon
Head out after breakfast with your Tour Leader and a local guide to check out the highlights of downtown Yangon by foot. You’ll see the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar whose golden spire dominates the city skyline, and glittering Sule Pagoda, the holiest traffic island in the world. Finish off with a stroll through the endless stalls and alleyways of Bogyoke Aung San Market discovering new exotic treats. The afternoon is free to do as you please; if you’re a tea lover, you absolutely must visit a teahouse and try the tea leaf salad! Meet at the guesthouse at 7.30pm packed and ready to go for your first experience on a plush overnight coach journey to Bagan.

Arrival Bagan

Arriving early in Bagan, we will drop our bags at the guesthouse and get right into exploring the mystical Bagan Archaeological Zone. With more than 3,000 temples across this sprawling site, Bagan is a temple lover’s dream destination. A guided temple tour will highlight some of the best known temples and share stories of their intriguing history and architecture, all before lunch! Either take some time out back at the guesthouse or park up at a local beer station, where you can usually find a local who is eager to practice their English.

Free Day Bagan

Bagan temples nothing short of massive, so you need more than one day to really wander around all its wonders. Today you have a full free day to explore and we highly recommend hiring a bicycle or electric scooter to get around the town and surrounding area. Bagan is split into ‘Old Bagan’ (where you’ll be staying) and ‘New Bagan,’ about 15km apart, and you might enjoy cycling between the two, as well as taking a closer look at some of the temples and pagodas not seen on your guided tour. However you choose to spend your free day, don’t miss out on one of the world’s most spectacular sunrises or sunsets from atop a pagoda.

No accommodation, Overnight Bus.

Bagan to Kalaw

It’s an early start this morning to catch the bus to Kalaw. Watch the scenery out your window change dramatically as we travel from the open plains to the picturesque mountains of the Shan Plateau and the quaint mountain town of Kalaw. You’ll immediately sense a difference in both the cooler climate of the mountains and the general vibe of Kalaw. As a Shan town, the ethnic influence is quite different from the Burmese you already experienced and may feel more like neighbouring China, Laos and Thailand. One of the best examples of this difference is in the fresh and delicious traditional Shan cuisine, which you’ll first taste this evening after stretching your legs getting to know this charming destination.

2 Day trek Kalaw to Village stay

Soak up the native surroundings of Kalaw as we begin our trek into the Shan hills. Your guide will give you an overview of the regional ethnic groups as well as point out some of the diverse native plant and animal life along the way. On arrival into the village, get involved in preparing some traditional Shan dishes for lunch, with a helping hand from your hosts and guide. How your afternoon plays out depends on the time of year and what the villagers are working on that day. Get as interactive as you like, visit a local farm and lend a hand, join in on an English lesson at the school, or learn the ‘circus-like’ art of transporting goods in baskets on your head!

NB. By law foreigners are not allowed to stay in the homes of the local tribal people, so you will be accommodated in a nearby ethnic-guesthouse with your guide.  Otherwise by day you are free to mix and mingle.

Non-trekking option: For those who are not able or interested in joining the trek, you will spend an additional night in Kalaw (where there is lots to explore) and travel by train to Inle Lake the next day to meet the trekkers in Nyuang Shwe. Your Tour Leader, who will travel with you, will advise you of details, while a local Guide will lead the trekkers.

2 Day trek Village stay Inle Lake

Expect to wake up to a chorus of boisterous roosters at sunrise. Nothing epitomizes village life better than starting your day early and enjoying a traditional breakfast with your hosts.  As push off again, heading towards Inle, your guide will shed further light on this fascinating rural area and the ways of its people. A brief boat ride on the lake you bring you to Nyuang Shwe, a small lakeside village that serves as the main access point to the popular destination of Inle Lake. After two hearty days of trekking, you’ll be happy to put your feet up, relax and reflect on your past two days with the Shan villagers. Nyuang Shwe offers an eclectic range of interesting culinary options so wonder the streets and find a treat yourself to a tasty meal of Shan, Nepalese, Indian, Chinese, or Burmese cuisine.

Free Day Inle Lake

After breakfast we hop on our long tail boats to power through the towering reeds of the upper lake delta. Make the most of this half day tour that will take you to see floating farms held together by bamboo, a lotus weaving centre, and maybe even a floating stilt monastery. Inle Lake is a protected wetland sanctuary, so keep watch for a variety of native birds. While on the lake you will also learn how to fish like the Intha and try your luck at catching a fish or two. For lunch you can sample regional cuisine at a restaurant on the lake. The boat tour will finish around mid-afternoon, allowing time for an optional winery visit at the Red Mountain Winery.

Inle Lake to Madalay (express day)

Take in one last look over the tranquil Inle Lake before boarding the bus bound for Mandalay. There will be stops en route to stretch your legs and have lunch, but today is a day to beat the heat and relax on a comfortable bus as we transfer to our next destination. Arriving by late afternoon, there will be time to wander around the area near the guesthouse to orientate you in this incredible hub of Burmese culture and catch the sunset over the rolling Sagaing Hills.

Free Day Mandalay

Start the morning with a city tour that covers Mandalay’s highlights, such as the magnificent former Royal Palace, a gold pounders’ workshop to learn the ancient method of making gold leaf, the intricate teak wood Shewnandaw Kyuang monastery and a look at the  ‘big book’ at the Kuthodaw Pagoda. As your city tour wraps up, this also signals the end of the trip.  However, your Tour Leader will have plenty of recommendations and can help organise excursions to Mingun, Amarapura, Sagaing Hill, or tickets to the world famous Moustache Brothers performance. Wherever you’re heading next, they’ll be able to help arrange your onward transfer.

A Week You Will Never Forget

The itinerary is structured to make sure your first week down under is jam packed with the best activities Sydney has to offer. What´s more, accommodation and many meals are included, along with great company and dedicated expert guides for practical support and, of course, to help you milk the most out of every experience along the way.

Meet Your Mates On Monday

Work Up Australia (46)Straight from the plane, you drop into the Xtreme Gap base in Sydney, where you´ll meet up with all the other arrivals. For many this is the start of long friendships, that last for the duration of Gap time in Oz and beyond, so it´s super exciting to see everyone meet.
You´ll get an introductory session from your guides, who´ll let you know everything about the practicalities of being in Oz and what you can expect from the first week with us in Sydney. It´s low-key and fun, and everyone´s excited to get going, but before we do, you´ll also get all the arrival admin out the way. This is sorted by us before you get here and includes bank cards, mobile SIMs and tax numbers; all the requirements to set you up for your stay in Oz, beyond your Sydney experience.
From here it´s straight into the city, for a full and comprehensive tour of all the major sights. You´ll see all the fantastic architecture of the Sydney Harbour  from the iconic Opera House, to the formidable steel curves of the Harbour Bridge. Then, it´s on to the Royal Botanical Gardens, where the multitude of Australian fauna blooms in the shadow of the city´s looming skyscrapers.
In the night, you can unwind with a meal and a drink on us, getting to know your fellow travellers late into the Australian night.

Explore Sydney On Tuesday

Work Up Australia (33)After an early start, the Xtreme Gap crew give the whole group a comprehensive introduction to all the ins and outs of working and living in Australia. These guys really are in the know, with first-hand experience of Gapping in Oz, so they have all the answers for what´s what when it comes to setting up camp here.
Afterwards, the focus of Tuesday is all about adventure and exploration. We´ll take you on a Harbour cruise to show you the city sights from a whole new perspective and we´ll delve deeper into the New South Wales cityscape by adventuring to Fort Dennison (a prison-cum-lighthouse glowering over the bays downstream from the Sydney harbour), Luna Park and Watson´s Bay in Woollahra (where the sandstone cliff peninsulas jut dramatically into the ocean).
In between seeing the sights you can swim in the warm waters of the coastline that straddles the harbour, take photos, or just chill in the Sydney sun as you please.

Wildlife and Wild Land On Wednesday

Work Up Australia (36)Wednesday sees us get out of the metropolitan centre of Sydney and into the New South Wales wildlife. The Xtreme Gap basecamp is an area of 6 acres, covered in rich rainforest fauna and home to a myriad of very Australian critters. We set off early from town, to let you get the most of this different setting, where you´ll stay for the next three days and two nights.
Relax in the day in the company of Josie the Kangaroo, or go wildlife spotting to try and catch a glimpse of some koalas, echidnas or possums in the forest, or dolphins and whales in the nearby coastline shallows (the sea is just 5 minutes´ walk from the basecamp!).
After an evening swim watching the Aussie sun dip below the horizon, it´s pizza night at the basecamp!

Thrilling Thursday

Xtreme Sydney Connexion (3)We start Thursday with some adrenaline pumping sand boarding in the nearby dunes. We get up in the 4x4s and ride back down again, so there´s no dune here too high to conquer!
After everyone´s had their fill, it´s of for an adventure filled bush walk, guided by the Xtreme Gap crew. There´s loads of wildlife to see, and the walk ends on one of New South Wales´ best lookout spots, where there´s a chance to take photos and go Koala spotting (here, families are observable the entire year round!). Then, as the sunlight fades and night creeps in, we light the BBQ in true Aussie fashion, and chill out around the camp fire into the early hours.

Party Boat Cruise on Frickin Awesome Friday

Friday´s a real high-point. The Xtreme Gap crew launch our very own boat and everyone gets up close and personal with the rich marine life of the New South Wales seas.

Aside from the bucket list beating dolphin spotting (when you´ll also have a chance to sit in the boom net while dolphins glide through the water below you), it´s also possible to spot whales in the water here.
LVY-jnF1ZSj6c3XHXP_ZtdTpSPcdEWtFS3pOnCDDLqoThe bonus here is that you´ll be on board your very own private boat during the party cruise, with just your guides and fellow gappers as company. We´re in full control of where we go, and we can explore the waters as we please; there really is no better way to experience this amazing place.
After the cruise we depart for Sydney and arrive at the highly rated WakeUp hostel. With a central location and a great selection of nightly entertainments, it´s a great way to get back into ´city mode´ and enjoy the Sydney night in style.

Shindig Saturday

While the day time may all be about chilling and getting some hard earned rest, the night time is about donning your dresses and brushing up nice. We meet in the early evening at one of the city´s best bars, where backpackers and locals enjoy the famous Australian beers, and gear themselves up for a night on the town.
From here, we get hedonistic on the Xtreme Gap Sydney Pub Crawl. With entry and drinks at 4 bars and clubs included, you´ll experience all the facets of nightlife that has made this city so famous.

Slow down, Surf’s up Sunday

Where better than to coax away those hangovers and unwind than the soft-sanded white beaches of Sydney? On Sunday we´ll

BDLfgE7SolUpMDdHPm7l3tkXWGI6M2jomuaCvH4VsM8,sOpVnU7B92ka3X9YME-8YzTip2NgUSgWDVrKT2UE7kU

transverse some of the most famous coastline in the Area, visiting six along the way. From the wide yellow stretches of Coogee, to the famous surf-swells of Bondi, this is among the most coveted beach territory in the world, and today it´s all yours!

Most people opt to start their Oz travels between October and March, as this is when you´ll get the best weather, and Sydney really is fantastic at this time of year. That said, there´s something to be seen here all year round, and the Xtreme Gap Sydney arrival package is a no-holes-barred, full-frills introduction to Gap Years in Oz, with the added bonus of a great bunch of like-minded travellers and fun-hungry tour guides ready and waiting for you in one of the country´s most endearing of cities.

Accommodation

s1You will be staying in downtown Sydney in the wakeup hostel, voted one of the best hostels in Australia, and consistently hitting the top of trip advisor.

The wakeup hostel is an awesome place to be located as everything is on your doorstep including our team who have their offices based directly in front of where you’ll be staying.

That means you can pop in there at any stage, access their free Internet (kind of handy in Australia is everywhere tends to charge you) but also you’ll be staying in one of the swankiest hostels in Australia.

There are loads of facilities available at the wakeup hostel, good chill out areas, comfy beds and safe and secure rooms. Is also slap bang in the middle of backpacker district, which means it’s really social, and everything is on your doorstep.

We have literally thousands of jobs available all throughout the country, and they are all geared towards working holiday Visa holders. It takes a special type of position to be suitable for people on working holiday visas, you are not allowed to work for one employer for more than three months so there are a wide range of jobs available and this is very handy to have a membership of our exclusive job finding service. You can go into the office any time to discuss what kind of job you need, and you can access the online database of jobs from anywhere in the country. You get 12 months membership access.
Not only is our Sydney connection a full-blown intro week we get to meet loads of people, turn on your social life from day one but we also have a fantastic award-winning jobs package as well. We have a dedicated team who actively hunt for backpackers jobs and can apply to these jobs for you. You also get access to travellers at work Australia’s largest online jobs database for backpackers, & the membership lasts one year. Travellers at work have jobs all over Australia not just in Sydney, so you can use this as you are travelling up the East coast or throughout the country. Jobs do tend to be relatively short-term in their nature as they are backpacker jobs, but that just adds to the fun of work and travel. You never know where you’re going to end up or what you will be doing or who you will be meeting.

We are often asked if it is possible to get a job prior to arriving in Australia, and the simple answer to this is no. You need to be on the ground and available for interview and keen to attend to secure those jobs, but it really does help that you have a dedicated team in Sydney backing up hunting for those exclusive jobs for you.

Sydney is by far the best place to start your Australian adventure. It is the economic powerhouse of the country, and it is one of the best places to live in the world. We have plenty of further information about Sydney on our blog so feel free to check it out, the information covers all sorts of things like reviews of the activities, what it’s like to live in Sydney and plenty of other useful information.
Yes it is, in order for you to know exactly where the best places are and do the best things available to you in Sydney, we have a couple of awesome group leaders who will sort you out and make sure you have the best time possible.
You have to be between the ages of 18 and 30 and be a national one of the participating countries in the Australian working holiday visa system. If you’re from the UK then this is absolutely no problem providing you have not already applied for one in the past.
Know the working holiday Visa is not covered in the cost of the trip, you will need to apply for one prior to entering Australia, the cost varies but this usually about hundred and £120.
Most people arrive on the Sunday, there is included airport transfer with this trip, so you make your own way to the hostel but this is prepaid for (you will be issued with a voucher before you arrive allowing you to jump on a bus dropping you straight at your accommodation). The arrival transfer does not take long, and you will check-into the hostel in your own name before meeting the rest of the group on Monday.

That is no problem we can book you in open dated, you just need to confirm with our team in Sydney before you arrive the likely date you’ll be joining.
Yes there are certain dates where this trip does not run, these tend to be during the major events in Sydney like New Year’s Eve, Christmas and a few select other dates contact us if you want to know the dates.
Yes absolutely, it’s quite easy to set up a bank account by mobile phone Sim card and arrange all the essentials yourself, however this does take quite some time to arrange, as you physically have to visit banks and do all the organising yourself. The beauty of this trip is that we take all the hassle out of arranging all staff meaning you can devote your first week in Sydney to just having fun making friends and kick starting your trip in the best way possible. The other majorly cool thing about this is the friends that you make, everyone is in the same boat and often lifelong friendships are formed in this first week, it’s not uncommon for people to end up travelling with other members of the group and the feedback we get from our previous groups shows that this is much more fun than just turning up in Sydney and doing your own thing.
Simply fill in your booking form and put down your hundred pound deposit, then your space is guaranteed, the final balance of the trip is payable 12 weeks before you depart give you plenty of time to save flights and spending money.
Other than giving you an amazing first week and access to jobs on tap. This trip is great for enhancing your CV with work experience. Whilst many people may struggle to explain away travel to future employers, it shows that you have self-reliance and ability to be responsible for yourself as you travel. It shows motivation and actual practical work experience as well. It takes some guts to up sticks and move to another country, but with the help of this program you can demonstrate you are more than capable of taking on the challenge.
