Although the best jobs get taken very quickly, so it’s better to sign up sooner rather than later before heading to Australia.  We do have limited availability on this program, so make sure you book early.  We will need a least two weeks to get everything together and usually the working holiday Visa comes through in two days. By now jetlag should be a distant memory, but after three action-packed days and nights in Sydney you´ll probably be glad to have a break from the big city lights and lie on a gorgeous beach instead. Well, you can. Its up to you now. When to jump on that bus leaving Sydney. Or will you hang out in Sydney for a while, or will you want to seek work and adventure elsewhere along the stunning east coast

The hop on-hop off style bus can be booked a few days in advance for each of the following sectors.

Sydney to Byron Bay

Sydney is the best, especially after you spend a couple of days here and get to know your way. There are some amazing restaurants, beaches, clubs. But watch your Australian Dollars. Your money will go quick here. So unless you find a nice job, it might be an idea to get on that bus and start exploring!

Byron Bay to Rainbow Beach Sector

Byron Bay

This section of the trip begins with some time spent in Byron Bay, chilling out and soaking up the bohemian lifestyle. However, if that sounds a little too sedate for you then you can take book in a  skydive at the travel desk of any hostel, it might only take a few minutes to get from 11,000 feet to the ground but the adrenaline rush will last so much longer! One night in Byron Bay is included at this point you will pick up all of your vouchers for the remaining activities awaiting you up the East coast.

Nimbin (optional not included)

The day trip to Nimbin is the perfect antidote to too much excitement (is that even possible?!). After being picked up from your accommodation, the Grasshoppers bus will take you through the stunning scenery of Byron Bay to the famous town of Nimbin, Australia´s ´alternative lifestyle´ capital. You´ll have around an hour to experience the hippie atmosphere and sample some special cakes before heading off to the explore rainforests and waterfalls, enjoy a pint in an historic Aussie pub and tuck into some food from the barbie.

It´s quite possible that you´ll get to see Koalas and Kookaburras during the trip, and that´s before the beer! Surfers Paradise The next part of the bus trip takes you from Byron Bay north to Surfers Paradise aptly named due to the 3km golden sand beach, right on the Pacific Ocean. There is something for everyone here, so if you need another shot of adrenaline there is bungy jumping and jet boating, if you´re the sporty type you can enjoy the surfing and beach volleyball, whilst those in need of some relaxation can chill out on the beach or in the cafes and parks of the Northside or West Quay districts.

The next stop for the bus is the city of Brisbane, capital of the ´Sunshine State´ of Queensland (but where isn’t sunny in Oz?). So, what can you expect here? A vibrant nightlife with the abundance of bars and clubs, a bit of culture at the City Hall and Parliament House and the chance to get up close with some of Australia´s most well known natives at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There is so much indoor and outdoor stuff to do here that you´ll never be bored and being the biggest city in Queensland it can be a good place to stop off for some work.

On the way from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach there is a stop off at the town of Noosa, to drop off old friends and pick up new ones. There is also a chance to have a wander around Wildhorse Mountain National Park, which provides some great photo opportunities of the gorgeous Sunshine Coast area yet something else to make those friends at home envious about!

Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island

Rainbow beach is a must-stop place to pick up the Fraser Island 4 x 4 tour. This unique site, the largest sand island in the world, will blow your mind with its beauty  pristine white sand beaches, freshwater lakes and the world´s only sand-dwelling rainforest. This is definitely one you can tick off the ´100 places to visit before you die´ list. Not only does the trip include two nights´ accommodation at Hervey Bay Backpackers, but also two nights camping under the stars, a chance to drive across the endless sands and the opportunity to meet some dingoes (human or canine depends on who is in your group!) Back at Rainbow Beach you can indulge in some more close encounters of the animal kind (we´re talking marine life here) with the opportunity to feed the dolphins. Plus you can meet some new trip recruits at the Hervey Bay hostel stop.

Rainbow Beach to 1770 Sector

After pick-ups and drop-offs at Hervey Bay the bus continues on to the towns of Childers and Bundaberg, which are the ideal place to stop off and replenish your dosh by doing some fruit picking. It´s pretty hard work but well worth it to make sure you’ve got enough funds for extra activities and partying. However, don´t go too mad on the Bundaberg Rum, or Bundy as it´s known, otherwise that fruit picking will be twice as hard! The next opportunity for stopping off and chilling out for a few days is the gorgeous little seaside village of 1770. If you want to spend a bit of time relaxing on golden sands and dipping your toes in the crystal clear turquoise water of the Coral Sea, then this is the place for you. There is still a ton of fun activities coming up on the trip so make sure you recharge your batteries so you can make the most of it! 1770 to Airlie Beach Sector

Airlie Beach a highlight of the trip  the Whitsundays cruise.

The three night package here includes two nights at the cool Nomads hostel and one night/two days sailing, giving you the chance to experience these unbelievable islands beaches, rainforest, unusual marine life and a party-to-remember. This will take you to Whitehaven beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Airlie Beach to Cairns Sector

The beach theme continues in Townsville, where you´ll be staying at one of the best hostels (own expense), right on the gorgeous sand, or on stunning Magnetic Island just off the coast. This is the sunniest spot on the Queensland coast, so you can make the most of the outdoor activities swimming, snorkelling, hiking, koala spotting or just chilling out with your mates. There is plenty going on at the hostel and when it comes to night-time entertainment look out for the full moon parties definitely something to remember (or not!).

Mission Beach

White sand beaches, lush rainforest and activities galore await you at the paradise hideaway of Mission Beach. A few days here can be as sedate or adrenaline filled as you choose and if you didn’t take a skydive in Byron Bay, now´s your chance! You won´t get a better view of the area and long after you touch down on the ground your euphoria levels will still be sky high. Mission Beach is also home to the impressive Cassowary, a huge flightless bird with very big claws, a sharp beak and bad-ass attitude you might not want to get too close, but they are certainly a sight to see.

Cairns Adrenaline Overload

You wouldn´t be in Oz if the last part of your ultimate adventure didn´t finish with a bang and that´s exactly what you get with the five night Adrenaline Overload tour! You´ll start by checking in to your accommodation at the Cairns hostel and getting to know your dorm mates in the bar before finding out from your guide exactly what you´ll be up to over the next few days.

Jungle Tour

You could settle in with a relaxing tour of the Daintree Rainforest, river cruise and visit to Mossman Gorge. The rainforest is unique in that it grows right down to the water´s edge and is one of the most complex ecosystems on earth, containing an abundance of Australian plant and wildlife, including the Idiot Fruit (honestly, we´re not kidding!). Ok, biology lesson over.

Tully River

If you´ve been a bit shy getting to know your dorm mates then getting thrown around in an inflatable raft whilst being pounded with foamy water is the perfect way to break the ice! Your Tully River trip is a full day that includes hostel pick-up/drop off, BBQ lunch, highly experienced guides and up to 5 hours rafting, not to mention other activities such as rock jumping, rapid swimming, and raft surfing. You won´t go home dry but you will be on a high!

Great Barrier Reef

You can´t visit Oz and not visit the world famous Great Barrier Reef, and as trips go the Passions of Paradise tour is the best on offer. Dates are flexible and there are daily sailings, so you can fit this in when you choose. You may have seen images of this amazing natural attraction in books or on TV, but nothing can prepare you for seeing it in real life exotic marine life, colourful coral gardens, and stunning views all around will take your breath away almost as much as the skydiving! If snorkeling isn´t enough for you, you could always use some of your hard earned cash (or the bank of mum and Dad!) to take a diving trip.

The minimum amount of time you need to complete this trip is 5 weeks, but if you want to find some work along the coast allow yourself 8 weeks or longer.

One thing to remember is that drives are very long, Australia is enormous and the bus might not go every day, so double check the schedules and be prepared to supplement some of the Oz experience sectors with greyhounds if you are in a rush.

However you decide to do it this really is the trip of a lifetime and one that we think is a life changer you might leave home a nervous, first-time traveler, but you´ll return a daring adventurer with more friends than you could have imagined!

Saturday morning is the perfect time to look at organising you will need after that first week. We’ll look at everything! From setting up your own Australian bank account to how tax works to help you find a job or where you’re travelling to next!

As we wrap that up, we’ll crack open the beers before the big Saturday night bar crawl!

INCLUDED: 4 drinks and pizza

And as if like that, it’s nearly over. We’re not silly and we know there could be some sore heads Sunday morning.

We’ll be around all day to help with any questions on ‘What next?’ and then what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than lazing on a rooftop overlooking the city with your new travel family?

We’ll crank up the BBQ, hand out the beers and soak up the skyline as we talk about memories made over the best week of your life.

INCLUDED: Dinner and drink.

We set you up in one of the best hostels in Melbourne, central, with everything you need. Loads op optional activities for you to choose from, plus a great vibe.

We try and get everyone on Xtreme Gap in the same dorm, but if you have any special requests like you want to be in an all all-female or you want to upgrade to your own room. Then we will be able to assist you.

Yes! There are both tourist and working holiday visas available and which you pick would depend on where you’re from, how long you’re staying in Australia and what your plans are for your visit.

We recommend organising this as soon as possible. The application can be completed through a visa agent, or directly through the Australian Government website, which is here.

We would always recommend checking Australian Government website for any specific enquiries.

Morocco surf instructor course details

Once the exclusive territory of Berber fishermen, wandering hippies and seasoned wave riders spying the next rare break, thanks to some determined local surfers with a passion for sharing the swell with everyone, the Moroccan south coast is fast becoming a haven for anyone looking to conquer some waves while exploring the mosaic of desert, mountain, beach and bustle that this country , which is the  gateway to the African continent – offers.

Shrouded by the mountains that stretch deep into Morocco´s heart, perched perfectly on the warm swell of the West African Atlantic, the fishing town of Taghazout has become home to the Xtreme Gap surf instructor camp. Devoted riders themselves, these guys are passionate about everything surf and dedicated ambassadors of the waves.

The surf instructor course packages have been developed to maximise riding time and surfer development, while the opportunity to participate in a wholly immersive experience, with salt-spray waves in the day and spiced up tagine at night, is what´s given these guys their great local reputation.

About the surf Academy

We run the ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors) level 1 course in conjunction with the SLS (Surf Lifesavers Qualification). The ASI is the worlds leading surfing accreditation and training organisation. It is a globally recognised qualification which can lead to real paid jobs as a surf instructor all over the world. At the Xtreme Gap surf instructor course we put both qualifications together in a nice hassle free course!

We have an all local team of chefs and boy can they cook! All your food is included in the price of the course to make it completely hassle free. Breakfast is served at our beach front cafe over looking the waves, an absolutely perfect way to start a days surfing.

Depending on the waves…

Lunch is usually served at the beach as sandwiches, rice, salad, BBQ etc.

In the afternoon

Dinners are served on our beautiful roof top terrace overlooking Taghazout at sunset. Big hearty meals for surfers is on the menu with a mix of traditional Berber cuisine such as couscous and Tajines on some nights, and big BBQ´s of fish, kebabs and homemade burgers on other nights.

  • 8:00-9:00: Breakfast in our beach front cafe. Consisting of Croissants, coffee, tea, cereals, fruit, bread, spreads, eggs, yoghurt, fruit juice
  • 9:00 – leave for the surf
  • 9:30 – 11:30 – surf lessons.
  • 12:00 – lunch. consisting of sandwiches, fruit, snacks, drinks
  • 13:00 – 17:00. More surfing! Also in the afternoons there will be the community projects
  • 17:00 – 19:30. Chill time. Explore the town, chill with the other surf campers, get a sunset surf in, do some yoga etc
  • 19:30: Dinner and relax!

The instructor course is heavily focused on safety in the water. Safety is of paramount importance when teaching someone to learn to surf and the ASI’s safety in the water is internationally known as one of the best! During the course you will learn how to spot rips and currents, discuss the nature of dynamic risk assessments and learn beach lifeguard techniques.

Reasonable levels of fitness are required. We ask that you can swim 25 metres before you start the course, but over the 12 weeks your fitness will improve naturally so don’t worry if you’re a bit out of shape!

Odd as it may sound, we realise that surf camps aren’t always about surfing. They´re about riding waves and discovering different places too, and we don´t want anyone to leave us without their fair share of Morocco – from the dust clad foothills and mountain vistas of the anti-Atlas mountains that shroud Taghazout from behind, to the babel of local fishing village life, the hubbub of Agadir´s bazaars, and the sporadic countryside forests nestled in the aptly named and nearby Paradise Valley.

So, if you or the surf is ever feeling flat, just quiz one of the team, and we´ll point you in the right direction for any activity that takes your fancy. Whether you want to sustain the adrenaline of the waves dune biking in nearby Massa game park, get traditional with a camel ride, raise some sand galloping your way across Taghazout´s surrounding beaches, or soothe those out-surfed muscles with a local Moroccan argan oil massage, we´ve got it all!

There´s also the opportunity to unwind with top quality yoga instructors, who take classes for as low as £12 in local currency in some of the most panoramic spots in the area. You can stretch those aches and pains out, while the sea spray rises from Anchor point below and the Moroccan sun drops behind the horizon.

Finally, if you just want to chill, drop into the Hash Point Cafe where you can watch the Atlantic waves break over the rocks with a fragrant Tagine, some freshly caught fish, or if you´re feeling less adventurous one of the Cafe´s famous bacon double cheeseburgers. (There´s also a wealth of surf gear available for rent in the Cafe, and the manager Rachid is always happy to talk surf, food and local culture).

  • For the first 4 weeks a local teacher will come to the camp twice a week to teach everyone basic Arabic. By the end of the 4 weeks, we hope that all the everyone will be armed with enough knowledge of the language that you can then use your phrase book to chat to the guys at the camp and in town.Over 80% of our staff are Moroccan, and they absolutely love it when tourists speak their local language with them. After the 4th week, official Arabic lessons stop (as we´ll be really focusing on the surfing!) but if anyone really wants to continue, we can arrange weekly classes for you.
  • ´Aftas Association´ was co-founded by our partner in Morocco a few years back to help out the local schools with books and classroom equipment. During your 12 weeks in Taghazout you´ll work with ´Aftas´ to teach English at the ´Taghazout Ecole Superiere´ to children of the age ranges 11-16. To start with you´ll be one of the teaching assistants until you have the confidence to take your own class. Each week you´ll spend the afternoon at the school helping the local children study towards their baccalaureate in English!
  • Live with a local berber family: The Berbers are the indigenous people of North Africa. A very friendly group, always willing to accommodate and welcome you into their homes, you´ll spend a weekend in the hills with one of the families that we have grown very fond of and close to over the years. See how a traditional household is run, cook traditional berber food, help out on the farm and experience the simple life for just a weekend (longer if you´d like of course!)

During those rare occasions when Poseidon and Neptune don´t smile upon us and the waves cease to exist we are not left twiddling our thumbs and practicing our Eskimo rolls. We can take you off to Immouzer or as the locals call it – Paradise Valley. There is only one road in the village. The friendly inhabitants and the simple houses make it clear you are well off the beaten track. Chill out in tranquility and seclusion of the waterfalls. Take a plunge in the rock pools, or trek through the forests something of a rarity in Morocco.

If you need a break from the physical demands of the surf, relax and treat yourself to a four handed massage at the local hammam! Want to get a few gifts for back home? We´ll take you to the Agadir Souks or if you want to see the local countryside a little more jump on a camel. Why not go for a horse ride along the beach at full gallop! We organise quad biking excursions through the dunes of the Massa game park for the petrolheads out there as well. When you arrive at the surf camp, just ask the manager for information on all of these options and we will set you on your way for your action packed surf holiday.

How about a yoga session after a long day’s surf? Our professional instructors takes sessions at the luxury apartment complex overlooking Killer Point. The gardens have views that overlook both Anchor Point and Killer Point and the sunset sessions provide the perfect way to stretch down those aching muscles. All payments for Yoga lessons are made locally to your yoga instructor for the day. Normally the lessons start at roughly £12 in the local currency and to book in just ask the surf camp manager, it could not be easier!

Living at a surf camp:

The surf camp is one of the nicest and most sociable surf camps in the whole European and North African area. The camp itself is situated just 2 metres from the water´s edge (in big swell and high tides you have to time your exit so you don´t get wet!) and we have a beautiful roof terrace that over looks the whole of Taghazout!

At the surf camp you really will live and sleep by the waves. The camp duck-dives the swell all night; sitting literally on the shoreline, you will never be too far from the action, and whether you´re dusting off a tagine on our dinner-time roof terrace or chilling out with some surf vid action in our lounge, we guarantee that reassuring sound of a crashing wave will never be too far away.

Your accommodation will be shared, in apartments close to the Xtreme Gap camp, nestled in the square roofed, sun baked buildings of Taghazout, just a stone´s throw from some of Morocco´s greatest breaks.

How do you become a  Scuba Instructor? Complete Your  Mexico IDC

If you are a complete novice in diving it will take you 7 months to train up to become a dive instructor, but is a pretty awesome 7 months. If however you have not had pre-dive experience please to think long and hard about this (see below).

Becoming A SCUBA Dive Instructor – Before you start

Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (12)There are usually two types of people that think about becoming a SCUBA dive instructor. Those who already have an existing dive qualification, and others who are toying with the idea because they like the idea of a career change.

If you do not already have an existing dive qualification (open water) then it is best that you contact us first to discuss your options. It is a huge commitment becoming a SCUBA dive instructor financially, as the IDC pre-required courses do not come cheap -and that’s just the courses you also have to factor in living costs prior to starting.

There are a whole host of things that you should consider prior to starting and we are able to talk you through your options from the point of view of experience. Many of our staff hold scuba-diving instructor qualifications and have completed their IDC’s. So if you want a genuine insight into what it is like to be a diving instructor and what is required to pass exams then get in touch on e-mail.

Doing Your Mexico IDC Scuba Dive Instructor Course  The Process.

To become a SCUBA dive instructor and work anywhere in the world, you need to complete your instructor development course aka your IDC. The instructor development course will cover all the theory and practical modules and learning you need to undertake prior to doing your IE (instructor exam). The instructor exam is overseen by an examiner from the accrediting organisation usually PADI although it is possible to gain instructor qualifications from other agencies such as SSI. The course director who runs the instructor development course (IDC) is just responsible for getting you up to the level where you will pass your instructor exam. For this reason instructor exam fees are not usually included in the cost of IDC’s as the instructor exam fees go directly to PADI.

Prerequisites to becoming a SCUBA dive instructor

Obviously you need to be able to dive, but officially you need to have six months from the initial first SCUBA diving qualification to the dates you start your instructor exam. This means you need to gain experience which is good for the students and obviously good for you as well.

There are several qualifications you will need to go through prior to starting your SCUBA dive instructor course.

  • Open water
  • Advanced open water
  • Rescue and EFR
  • Divemaster

You can then regain your OWSI or open water scuba diver instructor certification. The above are based on the PADI system and is generally interchangeable with other systems such as SSI.

Pre-requisite checklist

  • You must hold a PADI Divemaster certification or equivalent.
  • Have  96 logged dives that include experience in night, deep and navigation diving to participate in the PADI Instructor Development Course. You´ll need 100 logged dives to take the Instructor Exams.
  • Have CPR and First Aid training within the last 24 months.
  • Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months
  • age: 18+

The IDC takes place in the pool, open ocean and classroom. Usually run once a month they are done in a group with a course director overseeing the training. The IDC’s are almost always followed directly by the IE and upon completion you can then start to look for a SCUBA dive instructor job. ¡

Training & Course Break Down

If you have no prior diving certifications you start of with your PADI open water certificate, this will take you about 4 days. After that you do your advanced open water which will take you 2 days. Then the more serious work starts and we will take you through the rescue course and your EFR. The Divemaster follows then the IDC.

  • Open Water
  • Advanced Open Water
  • Emergency First Response (First Aid)
  • Rescue Diver Certificate
  • Divemaster
  • EFR Instructor
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor Development Course (The IDC)
  • The Instructor Exams (fees not included)

Pre IDC: The Divemaster

Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (1)The Divemaster internship is where you gain most of your commercial experience in the dive industry.  This is also the point where you really develop those necessary dives and gain experience underwater.  Remember to complete your IDC you need 96 logged dives, if you were to do this by the traditional route of paying fit each dive individually this would cost you a lot more.  During the Divemaster course you will be diving a lot, and through experience learn about how to react to and deal with multiple situations underwater.  This could be whilst diving with clients or reacting to situations involving yourself only.

Are The Instructor Exam Fees Included?

No, unfortunately they are not.  It is pretty expensive to become a Diving instructor, but ultimately worth it. The IDC (abbreviation for Instructor development course) includes the required training both practical and theory with a qualified course director, to get you up to the standards needed to pass the Instructor Examination. The Price of the programme covers the IDC (It also covers the accommodation and diving costs and course learning materials as well), but not the examination fees.

Think of it like learning to drive, you are paying for the lessons, and instruction. The instructor examination fee is just that, it is the fee paid to PADI to sit and mark the exams. They send out their own examiners to mark you and certify you ensuring you are up to standards. The fee is the same regardless of where you sit the exam as these are set down by PADI based in North America.

So please note you will need to budget at least $849 USD on top of the fee to Xtreme Gap to cover the extras. This is however guaranteed, in the unlikely event that you fail your instructor exam we will refund you your fees or put you through your course again so that you pass.

Your accommodation is in a beautiful boutique hostel, with a great intimate atmosphere. The rooms have private bathrooms and air conditioning! All guests have use of a big terrace where they can relax or just share travel tips with other guests. Its located in a great neighbourhood, everything is round the corner, oh and there is free WiFi!

The best hostel in Playa del Carmen for sure. Perfect blend of atmosphere without being too crazy. Great chill out area in the middle with fun events at night. The staff are all really good fun and friendly. The place has a great vibe and if you like tequila you will do very well here.

We include breakfast for you. Breakfast is a buffet style and includes – coffee, tea, bread, butter, 4 types of jam, 2 types of cereal, milk and 2 types of fruits, so good start of the day!

Why do your Divemaster course in Playa del Carmen?

There are many reasons to do your Divemaster internship in Playa del Carmen. The location is extremely easy to get to, and highly rewarding once you are there. Underwater you are in for a treat, crystal clear turquoise water, with incredible marine life. This is one of the worlds top locations to see whale sharks, at certain times of year you have huge bull shark populations as well (Nov – March).

Year round the water is warm and the visibility is great.

When you are not in the water there is plenty to do, incredible white sandy beaches famed for being some of the best in the world, cool beach bars and warm Mexican hospitality.

There’s usually something going on in Playa del Carmen, not that you have to go out every night if you don’t want to. The hostel is the perfect sanctuary for those wishing to escape the madness, although no doubt you will want party a fair amount as this is a great reason to choose this location.

You don’t have to be a party animal though. Beach lovers will be completely at home here, some of the best beaches in Mexico are at your disposal. After all this is the Caribbean!

Diving in Playa del Carmen

Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (11)A great reason to do your Divemaster in Mexico, and go diving in Playa del Carmen in particular is because of the quality of the dive sites. In general the reefs are very healthy, and there’s a lot of biodiversity underwater. In general the visibility is very good, sometimes when there is a storm this might stir things up a bit, but when you compare it to places like Thailand the actual quality of diving is much more superior in our opinion.

This is a major breeding grounds the turtles, and you can see this when diving. Huge loggerhead turtles and green turtle populations always make dives interesting. But one of the most fun things about diving in Playa del Carmen, is the drift diving.

Because there is a significant current runs along the peninsular with the tides, in general you will drop in at one insertion point and not have to fin for the entire duration of the dive, you can just drift along the reefs checking things out. It’s a fantastic experience. There are large walls the go down past the 30 m mark, so you can plan your dive profile accordingly.

You will see plenty of tropical fish, Nudibranches, box fish, parrotfish Moray Eels. In season the bull sharks come, very few things can give you an Xtreme buzz when diving like a bull shark.

Diving the Cenotes

Xtreme Gap Playa del Carmen Mexico (61)This part of Mexico used to be all underwater. As the sea level changed and the peninsular rose out of the water it left behind plenty of caverns caves and underground rivers known as Centotes. Officially there are over 10,000 registered but new ones being discovered all the time. This is because mainly they are based in the jungle, and the miles and miles you have impenetrable rainforest jungle surrounding the highway that connects can cocoon, to Playa del Carmen and further south to Tulum.

The Cenotes are amazing to dive. They are freshwater, with amazing light. Deep blue colours, and an almost eerie atmosphere will give you an incredible experience.

You will get the opportunity to dive a Cenote or many of them during the Divemaster course although this is an optional upgrade as cave diving is not for everyone.

You would also be able to do some specialist courses, again as an optional upgrade the PADI Bull Shark speciality course and the Cenote Speciality course as well.

One thing that sets the dive school apart from many others is the impressive quality of the equipment. All of which is included in the course although we do recommend you bring your own dive computer.

In general we use Cressi gear with brand-new wetsuits and 2014. Regulators and BCDS are well maintained and replaced regularly. We also the only dive shop in Playa del Carmen to have an extensive stock of re-breathers we have six of them costing around €8000 each.

The Xtreme Dive Team

On Mexico Divemaster you will join the Xtreme dive team and become part of the family. Staff roster is impressive with highly qualified dive instructors from all over the world. From France, Denmark Mexico the USA and UK. As part of the Divemaster internship you will be mentored by one instructor but received input from the entire team. You will learn about the successful running of the dive school, and help out while diving every day working towards your dive master qualification.

The lifestyle

Doing your Divemaster is as much about living the dream lifestyle as it is about learning to dive professionally. We select our Divemaster training locations selectively based on some key criteria. Certainly the diving is an important factor, but when you’re out of the water is also important. Playa del Carmen is the perfect location lifestyle wise for your Divemaster. Not that you need to be out partying and socialising every night, but you certainly can blow off steam whenever you want. When you are not at the dive school you have an amazing beach with all the associated activities on your doorstep.

It’s a truly international place, where you will meet people from all over the world and have a lot of fun. If you want to spend some time after your Divemaster course, to travel Mexico there are plenty of places to visit. Even if you want to take the weekends to do many adventures, you have some of the worlds best diving in Cozumel just a $13 half an hour boat ride away.

There is the paradise backpacker heaven of Tulum. When you want to get out of the city this is the perfect escape.

One of the great things about doing your Divemaster in Mexico is some of the exciting bolt ons that work well with this program.  If you want to do something completely unique take advantage of some of the underground caverns and cave systems here.  With our exciting Mexico cave diving course.  This is the real deal of diving.  Cave diving is one of the most dangerous forms of diving, so do not even consider doing this until you have done your Divemaster.

Want to explore other areas in the region? The Belize underwater conservation programme is a perfect addition once you are certified. Or take advantage of the low cost and very short distance between Cancun Mexico and Cuba. The Cuba experience could be a perfect addition also.

Finally you can explore other Mexico trips which you can add on in addition to the Divemaster course.  A free diving course is a great complimentary programme.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

One of the benefits of booking your trip on Koh Tao with Xtreme Gap Year is not only do you get to do this awesome activity, but you will become part of the Xtreme gap family on Koh Tao. We will pick you up from the pier and give you a warm welcome at our stunning resort. On your first night our resident representative will take you out for a gorgeous Thai meal annual get to know all of the other members of the group. When you are booking a trip with us it is not just about the activity so please bear this in mind if you are comparing prices to other companies. No other company has such a big presence in Koh Tao, runs groups of like-minded travellers so booking a trip with us is as much about the friends you make as well as the experiences you will have.

You need to have diving experience because you will be taking a camera underwater. You need a minimum of Divemaster qualification. The minimum training level for this course is Divemaster qualification.
Our reasons for this are you will often be working as a full-time diving professional and the knowledge and skills acquired in the divemaster programme will make you a valued member of any dive operation you work with. Another reason is that you will often be filming customers with various levels of experience from new students to lapsed divers re-entering the world of scuba. Your professional training and experience at this level will help you get the best footage of the groups without having a negative effect on their experience.

During the internship part of the course you will make 40% per sold video.” This is because we allow the videographers to discount the prices depending on the group size, so the final amount they can earn will vary from job to job.

You will be filming for example open water students in the morning, edit the movie in the afternoon and show the movies in the evening and hopefully, when they are good enough you sell them. The group you film can consist of 1 to 5 persons, so there is a big change you sell more than one video per group.

Around £20 per day should be enough for a great gap year. If you are not the drinking type and you like more quiet nights you could do it for £15. During the day you will only spend some money on food and water, and trust me, that is cheap!
Thailand is great for a gap year, because the weather is always nice. Maybe except October and November when it is rainy season. But for the rest of the year it is hot and sunny! And even in the rainy season you will have lots of sunshine and hot weather.
Yes, there we will be other Xtreme Gappers on the island. We do never know exactly how many, but there is always an average of 5 to 12 travellers from Xtreme Gap. Not all gap year travellers will be doing the Thailand Divemaster programme. There are also options to do Mixed Martial Arts, Yoga, Free diving and people on Thailand round trips. For more gap year Thailand ideas please check our site. Everyone will stay in the same resort.
The rooms are spacious and clean and have a nice balcony. Every fan room has two single beds, a TV and  ensuite bathroom. If you wish your own room during your gap year diving, there is an option to get your own private room, for just £75 extra a month.
The resort is part of the dive school. There is a reception, bar, restaurant with Thai and Western food, a big pool with sun beds pool, friendly reception, spacious rooms, and internet. The resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach, the bars and the restaurants.
Yes, there is support for you on Koh Tao. Xtreme Gap has a rep on the island that will be there for all gap year travellers. The rep will meet you on arrival at 4 pm at the resort, show you around, take you out for dinner, introduce you to other gap year takers and will be there for you 24/7. Furthermore, you will also be working with your instructor closely every day. We will also have an emergency number.
You can buy anything you need on Koh Tao, and it is much cheaper than back home, so pack light! The shops are all close to the resort. You can buy souvenirs, sun lotion, mosquito repellent, swim shorts, flip flops and everything else you might need just on the island.
You would need a backpacker insurance with an upgrade since you will be diving up to 30 meters deep. We recommend InsuredandGo since they offer good value and cover the necessary diving and sports travel activities we offer.
We have arranged that your transfer tickets are ready at the desk of the hotel in Bangkok. The night after arriving you will get on an overnight bus and then in the morning a few hours on the boat. Also the pick up from the pier on Koh Tao on your day of arrival is included. Be sure to check our you tube channel which has detailed video instructions and a walkthrough. One you are on Koh Tao everything is very easy as the island is 21 square km, and the resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach and all restaurants.

Livin’ by the beach, lovin’ the surf…

Surf HolidaysThe surf camp is located about a two hour drive from Byron Bay in a secret surf spot, right on the beach. For the next one or two months you ´ll enjoy the secluded beaches and the surf camp where you will eat, breathe and live surf! You will develop your surfing abilities and live the life! You can start the surf development course without surf experience. You do have to love the sea, because this will be your class room.

You can join the course for one or two months. You have the opportunity to train every day and you will get lots of one on one attention. This will improve your surf skills in a very short time. Top instructors will mentor you, assessing your surfing by photo´s and video´s and you will learn about water safety awareness and surf fitness.  The instructors at the camp are some of the best in Australia, John the head instructor was ranked in the top ten in the world for eight consecutive years. He certainly knows a thing or two about surfing.

Onto Spot X

Aussie Surf Trip (7)Your new home will be in the legendary Spot X surf camp. This is just North of Coffs Harbour, and located on a huge sandy beach. A  prime spot for surfers to hang-out. A great place to party and to hook up with lots of travellers all trying out some surfing. For the extra brave you can also do a skydive from this location.

There is a great vibe at the camp as quite a few surf trips stop here ” Oz Experience and Contiki Tours to name a few. It is not exclusive to us, but we do occupy the best spot, with a cool club house, bar, chill out zone and all the surf equipment you could need located right on the beach. There is an internet café to show your mates on Facebook the awesome (or serious) wipe outs of the day. The team are on hand not only get you out in to the waves, but keep you entertained with some serious partying!

Just a few rules that govern this place, so be warned.

  • Look cool and have fun.
  • No nudity (before 11am).
  • Speedos are banned.
  • No shit music.
  • Respect the local wildlife by not littering.
  • The surf instructor is always right and the customer is always wrong!
  • And if you go in November, the growing of an offensive tash is mandatory in Australia.

Awesome Oz Surfing (4)Set in a beautiful surf spot in a National Marine Park, this is a unique opportunity to spend time in one of Australia´s most beautiful coastal areas. You will be living in a beach front cottage with other surfers. The secluded beach is situated between Sydney and Byron Bay. There will be short term surfers here and others like you who are staying for a couple of months. It is a good and safe community, everyone is supportive and open to meeting new people. There is a nice communal area, camp fire area, free coffee and tea and a big TV room where you can chill if you wish.

Please note that you will be living in your own room right next to the beach, so your have easy access to the waves and can get out in the surf as soon as you wake up.

Take time to get to know the crew, get involved in the games and activities. Experience kayaking, skydiving, music around the camp fire and much more. Time on the beach can be as exciting or relaxing as you like.

Three times a day you will have the best fresh and healthy food you could wish for. Surfing makes you hungry. In the mornings there will be cereal, milk, fresh fruit, toast, jam, Marmite etc. For lunch there will be all kinds of salads, beans, meat and spaghetti. In the evenings there will also be fresh salads, pasta, meat, rice, desserts you name it! All freshly prepared for you! The portions are HUGE so that surfer appetite will be well catered for.

What you can expect to learn

  • Surf Instructor Course Australia (5)The basics, like standing up and catching a wave
  • The more advanced stuff, like cutting back and linking waves
  • How to read the ocean, currents and check for the best surf conditions
  • Ocean safety, and awareness

A lot of the knowledge is gained through practice, but when you are out in the surf you always have instructors overseeing you and getting your surf skills improved through positive and interactive surf coaching. Of course because you have your own surf shack with the rest of the long term surf dudes, you can avoid that when you wish. If you want to get up and hit the swell as the sun comes up…grab an early night and avoid a hangover, well for one day anyway!

Because the surf camp is really popular, with groups from Oz Experience and Contiki arriving every couple of days to learn to surf with the rest of the crew, it goes without saying that there is a great social scene there. Beach parties, BBQ ´s and lots going on if you dare.

Surfer dudes get sixpacks

And we are not talking beer either, you can expect to get extremely fit during the course, surfing uses and abuses every muscle in your body, and with the great food, you will get in shape in no time. Nice little bonus eh?!

The programme is specifically tailored and managed all the way through from Day 1 to Day 23.
With an additional two weeks of consolidation training specifically to practice the theory/skills learned from the first week, the programme is geared towards getting the  participants ready to work on the ultra high specification Maxi yacht favoured in the Whitsundays.

On this programme you will receive two full crew uniforms, and six nights accommodation in Airlie Beach. Note: If you already have sailing certificates, we can adjust the programme for you.

Finding work after the course

We have 80 operational crew working on the fleet of 16 vessels who work with us in the Whitsundays. Approximately  20% of these crew positions are filled by graduates of this programme. Only 4 spaces are available on this course per month.

It is difficult to predict when crew will be moving onto another location or job or switching to other boats in the Whitsundays, but typically staff move on after 3 to 6 months.

This is very important: We DO NOT guarantee work, however, if you are diligent and punctual, attend work neat and tidy, get good results and reports from the Skippers and Crew you work with, the odds of employment improve.

You may have to wait a while for a vacancy as we cannot predict when crew will move on to create vacancies. You are welcome to seek work with other Whitsunday operators who will be looking for the same skills. We also monitor the number of applicants starting the program, and do at times block out spots if we think too many are starting.

During December the crew numbers leaving does tend to increase, creating more vacancies. It is important to note that we encourage the students who have finished the course, that they are welcome to seek work with other companies in Airlie Beach, and our operational managers do speak to the other companies regularly regarding staffing and employments.

What does the job include

The job typically includes most accommodation and food, and you can be paid up to $500 a week. Imagine spending your time cruising one of the worlds most beautiful locations and have no living expenses and getting paid!
Many gap year students end up working for a few months, saving up a boat load of cash and then travelling further.

Who joins?

The sailing course is open to anyone over the age of 18. It is perfect if you are seeking a career in marine tourism (read living on various cool yachts, sailing the around one of the world’s best marine parks in the eternal sunshine of Australia!). You do not need any prior experience if you want to join the full 23 day course.

During the course you will be spending five days a week on the boat you are training on in shared (two persons) accommodation. You will be staying with someone of the same sex, unless you are a couple of course!

During the weekends you will stay in a nice hostel in Airlie beach. A young and vibrant little town, with plenty going on for when you are not working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes and no! Work on the commercial charter yachts can be pretty tough: provisioning the yacht, assisting guests, assisting with cleaning, working the decks, assisting the cook. However, if you are energetic and don’t mind getting involved, you will love it.
On the course all meals and linen are provided. All you need to bring is your swim gear, sun screen, clothing, a hat and sunglasses. As you will be spending the entire day on the water, you better also bring a t-shirt with long sleeves  so not to get sun burnt. When you are going in the Australian autumn or winter, you might need a jacket too.
If you wish to continue work in the industry your logbook is enough proof of education. You will need to continue getting this signed off as you work, this is proof of on-going training and/or experience also. The log book is a legal document.   An international certificate as such is not existent, you need to present your logbook.
This is not an advanced course as training to be a skipper/master of a vessel does require ongoing experience and training. This is a fantastic way to start a career in the marine industry.
By taking this course you are given priority for when jobs arise in the fleet. There are other shorter courses on offer providing similar qualifications. However, anyone who has done a sailing course on a small boat (say 25 to 45ft) would soon quickly realise that working on a Maxi is a whole new ball game. The rigging is different, the loads are different, you have coffee grinder winches, multiple winches working together and these yachts can really cause harm if people are not familiar, trained and experienced. This programme gives you experience on the big yachts and greatly increases your employment prospects.
Airlie Beach is really popular, and for good reasons too.
When you head out from Europe to do the Whitsundays as your first Australian adventure, the best place to fly into is Cairns or Brisbane. You can take the bus to Airlie Beach, around 600km from Cairns and 1,100km from Brisbane. Check out the Oz Experience bus pass and see some of Australia on your way…..When you are already in Sydney there are two options. The fastest is to fly from Sydney via Hamilton Island to Airlie Beach (around 120GBP one way). Airlie Beach has only got an airport for internal flights.    For your information Sydney to Airlie Beach is around 1,900km.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around   £170, which is the equivalent of €215. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have  around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.
Yes, you can undertake the 23 day programme. If you do not have a Working Holiday Visa, you cannot apply for a job with us at the end of the course. Some guests have done this course because they saw it as a good way to spend three weeks.
Unfortunately we  are not affiliated with the RYA, so we would not employ someone with any of the RYA qualifications, for example the RYA Day Skipper Qualification. So, in order to be able to obtain a job with us you have to do the course.

China Kung Fu 2015 (23)_800x600

Kung Fu Training in China

Train Kung Fu in China (2)You can learn at least 2 fist forms and also basic hard Qigong (optional and not be taken lightly). Whilst there are many styles available to learn, you should consider the fact that it takes many years just to master one so you will be focusing on only one or two fist forms throughout the course of your training unless you are a long-term student.

Training is Monday to Friday six hours a day needless to say it’s pretty hard-core. Be under no illusions this is an extremely tough training regime and should not be considered an easy just want to try it out type activity.

You will be pushed and pushed hard. Please do consider this before booking as there are no refunds for people who choose to leave the programme early.

Each Master will have a maximum of ten students in their group. This allows there to be a higher level of personal instruction offered than in other martial arts courses. Kung Fu requires a student to understand all of its elements, including the historical, physical and mental aspects, which are all taught on this personal level.

The masters conduct all lessons in Mandarin. However, there will be translators present to ensure you fully understand the movements and forms you are learning, and the students consist of 90% westerners.

1 to 3 months is enough to get a grip on the basics of Chinese Kung Fu, no matter which ever style you choose to learn. If you are a Kung Fu practitioner back home you can expect to progress quicker than at home.

Shaolin Kung Fu Vs Xtreme Gap Kung Fu!

Kung Fu Master China (21)There are many Kung Fu academies in China. Some of them excellent some of them not so nice to train at.

The most famous academy of all is the Shaolin Kung Fu Academy, centuries old where the Shaolin Monks Train. The Shaolin Monastery or Shaolin Temple is a Chan Buddhist temple at Song Shan near Zhengzhou City Henan Province in Dengfeng, China.

Westerners can train there although you can expect to be one of thousands of pupils mostly Chinese monks adhering to a strict monastic principals and schedules. Life is pretty damn hard when you enroll and drop out rates amongst westerners are extremely high as they can ´t hack the basic living conditions and extremely tough training which is delivered in Mandarin. Our School is not like that.

The Xtreme Gap School is western run by a UK national, who has settled in China to perfect his Kung Fu. After many years of training, he decided to set up his own school aimed at delivering proper Chinese Kung Fu instruction, with top Chinese Grand masters, to students from the west. The school has now been established for several years, and continues to thrive.

Within a beautiful authentic Chinese setting, great teachers and a supportive environment, more and more people are returning each year to train in some Kung Fu.

The Training

Kung Fu Styles:

xtreme gap kung fu china (15)There are several styles available from the forms below, depending on the current grandmaster resident some may not be available through out the year: Which ever style you end up choosing expect significantly increased health & fitness. Basics in which ever style you choose:

  • Shaolin Quan
  • Modern Wushu
  • Sanda,
  • Qinna,
  • Baji
  • Quan,
  • Pigua Zhang,
  • Qigong,
  • Taiji Quan,
  • XingYi
  • Bagua and /or White Crane (a rare local form).
Every group has it ´s own master who specialises in a different style. The groups will have maximum of 10 students. This means that you will be given lots of attention. No slacking off!

Concentration and a 100 percent effort is expected! The lessons are in Mandarin which is cool, you really get in the culture, and let´s face it, true Chinese Kung Fu masters are not great linguists, they are however excellent at martial arts. It will not stand in your way to learn – we will make sure there is someone present to ensure you understand all the moves.

A quick note about the training: we cannot stress enough how physically demanding learning Kung Fu can be, especially in China this is not the people who just want to give it a go without much thought. China is a long way to go to train in martial arts, and if you are not 100% committed it’s probably best you do not book this programme.

Not that we wish to put you off, as we believe this is one of the most exciting and self-developing trips we offer, however we do not want to give you a false impression that the training is easy and that this is something anyone can just do.

There is approximately an even split between men and women at the school, so gender definitely does not preclude you from hard physical training, and if you are reasonably sporty, with a reasonable level of base fitness you will be fine, but you need to be committed to training.

It is definitely advisable you start getting yourself into shape before you travel, press ups and a bit of running will do wonders for when you do arrive, but just remember nothing worthwhile comes easy, and this is definitely true this trip. If you really want to benefit from learning Kung Fu from living legends in the home of the martial art, then the more you put in the more you will get out of it.

Where are we ?

This legendary learning kung fu in China programme Is located in a town called YongPing in Yunnan Province of China. 3000 years of history is just waiting to be explored and the region is one of the most beautiful and all the China.  Set in the foothills of the Himalayas!

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

You can join anytime but preferred start dates are the first weekend of each month.
No, many people do not have any previous experience. You must, however, be prepared to learn and train hard. You will be put in groups according to your ability – many people are beginners, but others have more experience.
The best instruction, with thousands of years or lineage from the best Kung Fu Masters. You will learn more, improve faster, and because it is a dedicated martial arts holiday, you put in the extra effort necessary to become really good!
Yes you can. We teach Sanda and our teachers have competed at national level. So, I bet you will become really good at it!
In general our customers go for a month. Normally you can stay for up to a year and train Kung Fu or Sanda, but there are people training in their third year.
There is a big fridge in the communal area where you can keep your stuff.
We believe that £50 per week is plenty to cover everything you will need.
There is no safe in the rooms, but the management has onoe, so if you want to keep some stuff in there you can (like passport etc) But its super quiet and safe here.
The project is located in YongPing which is right in the middle of two cities which both have airports. The airports are called Dali and Baoshan, so please make sure your final destination is one of these where we will meet you and transfer you to the project. You will first need to arrange an international flight to China (Shanghai, Beijing), Hongkong or even to Thailand as that is not far either (Bangkok or Chiangmai airport) and then get another flight (domestic if from Shanghai, Beijing)  to Dali (or Baoshan).

Dali is a small airport so the majority of flights direct to Dali are expensive, you will find flights to Kunming are a lot cheaper and then once they have arrived in Kunming you have the option to get a direct bus to YongPing, a bus to Dali, or a 45 minute (Cheap flight) to Dali.

So the best international airport to arrive into is Kunming as from Kunming the flight to Dali (or Baoshan) is only 45 minutes.

Please note that flights from Kunming are limited so you may also want to look into flying into Guangzhou, Shanghai, or Beijing which have more regular flights but it does take longer and may require more changes.

We can advise, but you need to arrange your own visa. This is actually very straight forward, and all information will be in the predeparture pack you will receive after booking. When you are staying for 3 months or less then we recommend you to go directly to your local Chinese Embassy and ask for a 3 month tourist visa.
The fitter you are the faster you advance, but a moderate level of fitness is fine. This means not completely out of shape, but not mega fit either. To make it easier for yourself when you start training at our school, before you attend, you should try and do some of the following exercises: Squats, Push-ups, Sit-ups, Bike riding, Swimming, Short Sprints, Long Distance Running, Hiking, Gymnastics, Aerobics, Yoga or Daily Stretching. Once you are there this will improve naturally.
There are approximately 20 western people training each month at the camp. Normally about 30%+ will be girls/women.
You will share with the accommodation with the same sex and maximum 3 people.
Yes we can, you will be well catered for and will be according your wishes.
Wear comfortable jogging bottoms, track suits and T shirts. It can be quite chilly there in the evenings.
We do meditation everyday as part of our schedule. We teach our students various Qigong practices and students are also welcome to learn/ practice Zen Buddhism in our temple with Buddhist monks.
