Help with finding work after the course

Xtreme Gap Australia Surf Instructor Course (3)

After your three months of training, it will be time to find work if you want to. Work is not guaranteed but the chances are good. You will then be able to teach others to learn to surf and earn money by working on the beach and in the ocean! Job assistance is provided in Australia, but your qualification is internationally recognised, you can take it with you and earn more on your onward travels, previous Xtreme Gappers have gone onto Fiji, Bali, New Zealand and some have returned to the UK to teach.

But I have never surfed before…

You can start the surf instructor course at any level even without surf experience. You do have to love the sea, because this will be your classroom and you will have to surf a lot, but hey its fun!

The last month involves a lot of coaching skills.

This qualification enables you to work as a surf instructor in Australia. Perfect for a working holiday spent on the beach! If you do not wish to become an instructor but just want to surf a lot… you do not have to do the qualification.

Extra activities when not in the water.

You will be having surf lessons five days a week, at least four hours a day, but in your free time there is also other stuff to do. Take time to get to know the crew, get involved in the games and activities. Experience kayaking, skydiving, music around the camp fire and much more. On the beach can be as exciting or as relaxing as you like. We travel with volleyball equipment, footballs and other fun stuff. The surf academy is also a very social place, as alongside the surf instructor programme it is also a main stop for Oz Experience buses, meaning every week hundreds of backpackers stop by and yes, it can be a bit of a party!

If you are looking for a little peace and quiet, you have a surf house away from the riff raff to hang out and chill with other academy students. There tends to be seven to ten students training at anyone time, so you always have friends to hang out with.

Meals

Three times a day you will have the best fresh and healthy food you could wish for. Surfing makes you hungry. In the mornings there will be cereal, milk, fresh fruit, toast, jam, Marmite etc. For lunch there will be all kinds of salads, beans, meat, spaghetti and in the evenings there will also be fresh salads, pasta, meat, rice, desserts you name it! All freshly prepared for you!

Accommodation

Set in a beautiful surf spot in a National Marine Park, this is a unique opportunity to spend time in one of Australia´s most beautiful coastal areas. You be living in a beach front cottage with other surfers. The secluded beach is situated between Sydney and Byron Bay.

There will be short term surfers here and others like you training to become a surf instructor. It is a good and safe community and everyone is supportive and open to meeting new people. There is a nice communal area, camp fire area, free coffee and tea and a big TV room where you can chill if you wish.

Exam Fees Local Payment

Please note there is an extra local payment of AUD1000 (approx £500) paid on arrival. This covers the exam fee if going for surf instructor. If your surf skills are not up to standards by the time it comes to be examined you can forfeit the exam (and qualifications) and be refunded this locally.

You can pay this amount by credit or debit card on arrival at Camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

To become a surf instructor you will need a basic and competent level of surfing ability, although admittedly you do not have to be an expert. Much of the “skill” is gained through practice, a lot of which you will obtain on this course. The academy is designed to produce competent surfers in three months that have the skills to complete certification requirements, or become an intermediate level surfer. We have our best coaches working with the students every day which provides a high level of one on one attention. This allows them to improve their surfing in a short amount of time. We use techniques such as video and photo assessment, class room theory, surf fitness, water safety awareness, and countless water time in a concentrated form to ensure we achieve our outcomes. All this takes place in our own surf camps with access to the best waves in all conditions. Our academy is a truly unique experience.
No, you will not be with the same group all the time. Because some people just do the five day surf camp, some stay a month, others two (surf development courses) and some three months like you. As the trip starts frequently people come and go. However the instructors are the same and with surfing you make friends very easily! Soon you will find your way and make friends for life!
It is very likely that you will find a job after you have finished the course. 90% of the population of Australia live by the coast and there are surf schools everywhere. Our partners help you to find a job, but it is not guaranteed. It also depends on your own willpower too. If you really want it and go for it, you are very likely to find a job. In cause it does not work out with finding a job as a surf instructor, there are plenty of other jobs available.
Yes, you can join our Surf Instructor Course without applying for an Australian Working Holiday Visa. You will get your worldwide accepted certificate after finishing the course successfully, but you are not allowed to start working in Australia after you have finished the course. Remember that you cannot apply for a Working Holiday Visa when you are in Australia. You need to do that before you go. So, please think about this carefully.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around   £170. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have  around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.
As we are entering their habitat to go surfing there will always be a chance of a shark in the area, however we take every precaution possible to ensure our customers and staff are safe.
We do have wifi available, the price is $5AUD for 24hours, $10AUD for 3 days and $15AUD for 7 days.

There isn’t an ATM however we do accept Eftpos and there are daily shuttles running to Woolworths so you can get cash out there.

Hit the open road in Australia and you won’t regret it.

Depending on what pass you pick you will visit various destinations. So below we have included some information on some popular locations in Australia they may or may not be relevant to your pass. If you need help or advice planning on where to go just chat to one of our team and we can give you the lowdown of what pass is right for you.

Itinerary In Detail

Sydney to Surf Camp

The first section of the Oz Experience Bruce Pass heads from Sydney to The Surf Camp, you can stop at Coffs Harbour, but the real action is in Byron Bay.

Byron Bay to Rainbow Beach Sector

See them all in detail here.

Byron Bay

This section of the trip begins with some time spent in Byron Bay, chilling out and soaking up the bohemian lifestyle. However, if that sounds a little too sedate for you then you can take advantage of the skydive which can be included in your trip it might only take a few minutes to get from 11,000 feet to the ground but the adrenaline rush will last so much longer!

Nimbin

An optional day trip to Nimbin is the perfect antidote to too much excitement (is that even possible?!). After being picked up from your accommodation, the Grasshoppers bus will take you through the stunning scenery of Byron Bay to the famous town of Nimbin, Australia´s ´alternative lifestyle´ capital. You´ll have around an hour to experience the hippie atmosphere and sample some special cakes before heading off to the explore rainforests and waterfalls, enjoy a pint in an historic Aussie pub and tuck into some food from the barbie. It´s quite possible that you´ll get to see Koalas and Kookaburras during the trip, and that´s before the beer! Nimbin day trip is not included in the price.

Surfers Paradise

The next part of the bus trip takes you from Byron Bay north to Surfers Paradise  aptly named due to the 3km golden sand beach, right on the Pacific Ocean. There is something for everyone here, so if you need another shot of adrenaline there is bungy jumping and jet boating, if you´re the sporty type you can enjoy the surfing and beach volleyball, whilst those in need of some relaxation can chill out on the beach or in the cafes and parks of the Northside or West Quay districts.

Brisbane

The next stop for the bus is the city of Brisbane, capital of the ´Sunshine State´ of Queensland (but where isn´t sunny in Oz?). So, what can you expect here? A vibrant nightlife with the abundance of bars and clubs, a bit of culture at the City Hall and Parliament House and the chance to get up close with some of Australia´s most well known natives at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There is so much indoor and outdoor stuff to do here that you´ll never be bored and being the biggest city in Queensland it can be a good place to stop off for some work.

Noosa

On the way from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach there is a stop off at the town of Noosa, to drop off old friends and pick up new ones. There is also a chance to have a wander around Wildhorse Mountain National Park, which provides some great photo opportunities of the gorgeous Sunshine Coast area  yet something else to make those friends at home envious about!

Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island

Rainbow beach is a must-stop place to pick up the Fraser Island 4 x 4 tour. This unique site, the largest sand island in the world, will blow your mind with its beauty pristine white sand beaches, freshwater lakes and the world´s only sand-dwelling rainforest. This is definitely one you can tick off the ´100 places to visit before you die´ list.

Back at Rainbow Beach you can indulge in some more close encounters of the animal kind (we´re talking marine life here) with the opportunity to feed the dolphins. Plus you can meet some new trip recruits at the Hervey Bay hostel stop.

Rainbow Beach to 1770 Sector

Bundaberg

After pick-ups and drop-offs at Hervey Bay the bus continues on to the towns of Childers and Bundaberg, which are the ideal place to stop off and replenish your dosh by doing some fruit picking. It´s pretty hard work but well worth it to make sure you´ve got enough funds for extra activities and partying. However, don´t go too mad on the Bundaberg Rum, or Bundy as it´s known, otherwise that fruit picking will be twice as hard!

The next opportunity for stopping off and chilling out for a few days is the gorgeous little seaside village of 1770. If you want to spend a bit of time relaxing on golden sands and dipping your toes in the crystal clear turquoise water of the Coral Sea, then this is the place for you. There is still a ton of fun activities coming up on the trip so make sure you recharge your batteries so you can make the most of it!

1770 to Airlie Beach Sector

Airlie Beach

There are quite a few miles to cover to Airlie Beach so on the way there might be a stop-off at the town of Sarina for a game of barefoot lawn bowls (your guide will want to show off their skills!) before continuing onto the beachside party town of Airlie Beach and a highlight of any east coast trip  a Whitsundays cruise. (Optional Extra).

Airlie Beach to Cairns Sector

Townsville

The beach theme continues in Townsville, where you´ll be staying at one of the best hostels, right on the gorgeous sand, or on stunning Magnetic Island just off the coast (own expense). This is the sunniest spot on the Queensland coast, so you can make the most of the outdoor activities  swimming, snorkelling, hiking, koala spotting or just chilling out with your mates. There is plenty going on at Base Backpackers and when it comes to night-time entertainment look out for the full moon parties definitely something to remember (or not!).

Mission Beach

White sand beaches, lush rainforest and activities galore await you at the paradise hideaway of Mission Beach. A few days here can be as sedate or adrenaline filled as you choose and if you didn’t take advantage of the skydive option in Byron Bay, now´s your chance! You won´t get a better view of the area and long after you touch down on the ground your euphoria levels will still be sky high. Mission Beach is also home to the impressive Cassowary, a huge flightless bird with very big claws, a sharp beak and bad-ass attitude you might not want to get too close, but they are certainly a sight to see.

Cairns Sector

You wouldn´t be in Oz if the last part of your Australia adventure didn´t finish with a bang and that´s exactly what you get with the five night Adrenaline Overload tour in Cairns. This is not included, but well worth adding it in to your itinerary!

Accommodation

Accommodation and meals are not included in the pass prices.

This total flexibility is what makes it so unique. When travelling in remote or outback regions where accommodation is minimal (or non existent) and there´s not a supermarket in sight, a ´Local Payment´ will be charged to you. This is paid to the local partners directly to cover meals and/or accommodation and, in some instances, national park fees. This will be collected in Australia, in Aussie dollars. There are some stopovers included in this pass, but there is a local payment for these stopovers.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Please call us to book the make arrangements for the next available bus

The Oz Experience bus will only travel as far as one overnight stop to another in one day. This being so you will have to stay at least one night at each overnight stop. You can of course get off the bus between these overnight stops as per the Timetable.

It depends on how long and where you are travelling and also on what optional activities you might wish to do. Backpacker hostel dorm accommodation averages approx AUD$25 a night (more peak times and depending on the location). Depending on your appetite you might spend up to AUD$20 a day on food. Activities all vary in price but allow for skydiving, bungee jumping, zorbing, rafting and Fraser Island safari and Whitsunday sailing expenditure. The smart move is to book it all before you go meaning you will then be able to enjoy the social stuff with out worrying about having to watch your cash so much, saving up for the activities. The Ultimate Australia is the perfect choice or the Cairns Adrenaline Overload if you are on more of a budget.

Yes, so long as there is enough space. Normally the luggage limit is 15kg. We can´t guarantee the space, but we make every effort to accommodate people like you with a surfboard. The best thing to do is advise Reservations by phone that you will be bringing a surfboard before you start travelling and when you book on the bus for each sector of your travels.

It is a good idea to be as organised as possible so you can allow enough time to get off the bus and spend time doing the things you want. We can show you the rest with the inclusions in your pass. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment in busy times at least 3 days.

Oz Experience drops off at selected backpacker hostels. These tend to be better known backpacker hostels which are popular with all travellers and are reliable suppliers of accommodation.

Every pass has a “minimum recommended trip time”. This is the minimum amount of time we think you should allow to travel on a particular pass so you have enough time to get off the bus and stay longer at key places and do optional activities that you want to thus making the most of Oz Experience. Of course, you could travel faster than the minimum but you wont have much time off the bus. And you could take longer longer, up to 6 months. The avaerage time taken is 2 weeks but we would not recommend this. Add more into your itinerary (ask us for your options) and you will make the trip way better.

Your pass is valid for 180 days.

Yes. Trips run in both directions, north and southbound. Simply switch the stops on the itinerary and you´ll be laughing. See our website for full itineraries in all directions.

Sturdy walking shoes (ankle high), hat & sunscreen, towel & toiletries, swimming gear, warm clothing (including waterproof jacket and pants for southerly routes in winter), water bottle, torch, insect repellent, camera, film, money for some meals and optional activities.

No, but it helps! You will learn to surf in water where you can always stand up. You will be accompanied by an accredited surf instructor with full first aid qualifications.

No. You´ll end up with a couple of different guides and groups throughout your trip, but hey, you get to meet loads of great people this way! If you do make a group of mates along the way and would like to keep travelling together, you´ll all need to book well in advance. (But there are no guarantees we can fit you on the same tour.)

Yes, you can get OFF anywhere on our route (subject to there being a safe place to stop on the road. Often it is illegal to drop people at motorways/freeways/autobahns). However, you can only get back ON at the designated pick up times and places on our timetable.

Our location is on one of the best beaches in town, but we will  take you to where the best conditions are depending on your level
Local shops have anything you need and you can store your groceries in our fridge. There is a vending machine for drinks.
There are a few and a new one just opened around the corner, which is a great place to hangout.
Sorry, sheets only.  You need to bring your own towels and beach towels.
There are sharks in Cape Town area. However, a local kiter has never seen one in the five years he has been kiting along these beaches. Itinerary based on Sydney to Byron Bay

Day 1

At 6:15 you will be picked up opposite the Wake Up hostel in Down Town Sydney. We can book you in the hostel one or more days before so you can enjoy Sydney (check the wake-up package). . You head up the coast on a train with the guide. It’s a long 9-hour journey but super fun once you arrive.

Day 2

Early rise and get ready for a 2-hour surf lesson after a good breakfast. The beach is just a short stroll across the sand and after lunch and an hour or so to chill we will take you back in the water. You will probably catch your first wave standing up today if you did not already yesterday! In the evening, it is time for an Ozzie barbeque and the group hangs out together. By now everyone knows one another and you will have settled in nicely.

Day 3, 4

Morning and afternoon surfing lessons. This is where you find yourself improving, and if your luck is in the surf condition may pick up some bigger waves to test you! Be warned, though, you may start to find your muscles aching at this point, but hey, the first rule of surfing is to look cool, so no pain NO GAIN!

Day 5

After breakfast, we take you to Byron Bay! You can check into one of the hostels, we can recommend you one, and in the evening, we meet up with the whole group to party and say goodbye. Expect a night out at the infamous Cheeky monkeys. Drinking games and partying to end an epic five-day adventure, before going to bed to face a new day of travel in the morning.

PLEASE NOTE:  Sydney return trips (‘Boomerang’) you stay at our surf camp only, with all lessons, accommodation and meals at the Surf Camp. No trip to Byron Bay is included with this option.

Meet people!

If you are nervous about going it alone in Australia and want to know which is the best way to have fun and meet people, then this is the trip for you. Most of the people on the trip are solo travellers, but by the end of the trip everyone knows every one! You party together, surf together, eat and sleep (in dorms ;)) together. You will make great mates for life guaranteed.

The surf crew at the camps go along way to easy you into it as well, in fact they are a really good laugh and groups can ´t help but have a good time with the team. Check out the Crescent head video on the video section to meet some of the crew.

Incredible beach front camp

Tents, no thanks. Imagine spectacular beaches and comfy chilled accommodation where you can relax in between surfing. See accommodation section for details.

You would be nuts not to…

This trip was voted as the best backpacker trip for good reason, if you are coming to Australia, and not intending to surf, you are missing out. Big time! This is the nation that made surfing famous! With the days of fun, top instruction and incredible settings it will be one of your Australian highlights.

Accommodation

Spot X Surf Camp

Your accommodation on the surf trip will be in the legendary spot X surf camp.  In Summary:

Right on the beach with the prime spot in a popular surfers hang out. A great place to hook up with lots of travellers all trying out some surfing. For the extra brave you can also do a sky dive from this location. You stay in dorms up to 12 share, a great way to meet people!

This is just North of Coffs Harbour, and located on a huge sandy beach, set right at the door of the camp. There is a great vibe at the camp as quite a few surf trips stop here. The area is not exclusive to us, but we do occupy the best spot, with a cool club house, bar, chill out zone and all the surf equipment you could need located right on the beach. There is an internet cafe to show your mates of Facebook the awesome (or serious wipe outs) of the day and the support team are on hand to not only get you out in to the waves, but keep you entertained with some serious partying!

Home comforts and great food

Battling the monster waves leaves you pretty exhausted after a 2 hour session, so waiting for you back at camp is some home comforts, chill out areas and unbelievable food. When the party dies down at night, you can rest your now aching muscles in comfortable dorms ready to wake up to an awesome breakfast and another day of hitting the surf under the watchful eye of top surf pros.

Where to start

Most travellers start this programme in Sydney and we also offer a combination pack with a few nights in a hostel with many many extra’s in Sydney. We call this programme Awesome Oz. At the end of the trip you get dropped of in Byron Bay or Brisbane and you can decide to travel further up the coast.

You can also start in Brisbane (Or Byron Bay) and end in Sydney. If you do not intend on travelling up the coast (or not yet anyway) you can also do the boomerang trip, this heads from Sydney and arrives back in Sydney.

If you are looking to travel up the east coast and do all adrenaline activities like surfing, skydiving, off roading on Fraser island and diving, check out our Ultimate Australia programme!
