Days Two (Monday) & Three (Tuesday) Group Activities

One of the highlights today is the Sydney harbour 24h hop on hop cruise, or if you do not like boats you can join the Hop on hop off explorer bus. The best way to explore Sydney. nice and relaxing.
With three full days to explore the city, you can join in on the free hostel activities. These vary, just check with reception when you check in, so you won´´ t miss out.

What else? Stroll around the many colourful markets, people-watch on famous Bondi Beach and visit the gorgeous little islands scattered around Port Jackson.

Day Four to Eight Goodbye Sydney, Hello Surf

By now jetlag should be a distant memory, but after three action-packed days and nights in Sydney you´ll probably be glad to have a break from the big city lights and lie on a gorgeous beach instead. Well, tough luck because you´re going surfing! You´ll be picked upsuper close to the hostel, to embark on an amazing five-day surfari. Learn to catch the perfect wave by day and party by night two typical Aussie pastimes.

Thanks to the all-inclusive style of the trip the only thing you need to bring is yourself. All surf equipment, accommodation, and meals (except lunch on travelling days) is included. We even throw in that all important sun cream during the surf trip. By the time you arrive at the surf camp, you´ll already have got to know your new mates on the train, but if you are a bit shy don´t worry as there is no better icebreaker than beers and BBQ´s, not to mention falling off a surfboard!

The surfari takes you (by train) to Spot X, where you can enjoy the best beach parties and improve your surf skills from the first couple of days. The expert instructors will really look after you, so there is no need to be nervous just get in there and make the most of this amazing opportunity.

We guarantee that by the end of these five days you´ll be a surf convert and what better way to impress (and annoy) your mates back in cold Blighty? The tour ends in the cool beach side town of Byron Bay, where you can continue straight on with the next part of the tour, or take some time out to lounge on the beach, go snorkeling and explore the rainforests.

Day nine onwards – Flexibility!

A quick note here to point out that after the Surf Camp all of the sectors included in the Ultimate Australia Trip can be done at your own pace, allowing you to combine your travels with some work in-between, should you need to top up those funds.

If you wish to complete the trip all in one go then you should allow for around 5 – 7 weeks, but you can take up to 6 months, which is highly likely once you get a taste of the Aussie lifestyle!

The hop on-hop off style bus can be booked a few days in advance for each of the following sectors.

Byron Bay to Rainbow Beach Sector

Byron Bay

This section of the trip begins with some time spent in Byron Bay, chilling out and soaking up the bohemian lifestyle. However, if that sounds a little too sedate for you then you can take advantage of the skydive that´s included in your trip it might only take a few minutes to get from 11,000 feet to the ground but the adrenaline rush will last so much longer! One night in Byron Bay is included at this point you will pick up all of your vouchers for the remaining activities awaiting you up the East coast.

Nimbin (optional not included)

The day trip to Nimbin is the perfect antidote to too much excitement (is that even possible?!). After being picked up from your accommodation, the Grasshoppers bus will take you through the stunning scenery of Byron Bay to the famous town of Nimbin, Australia´s ´alternative lifestyle´ capital. You´ll have around an hour to experience the hippie atmosphere and sample some special cakes before heading off to the explore rainforests and waterfalls, enjoy a pint in an historic Aussie pub and tuck into some food from the barbie.

It´s quite possible that you´ll get to see Koalas and Kookaburras during the trip, and that´s before the beer! Surfers Paradise The next part of the bus trip takes you from Byron Bay north to Surfers Paradise aptly named due to the 3km golden sand beach, right on the Pacific Ocean. There is something for everyone here, so if you need another shot of adrenaline there is bungy jumping and jet boating, if you´re the sporty type you can enjoy the surfing and beach volleyball, whilst those in need of some relaxation can chill out on the beach or in the cafes and parks of the Northside or West Quay districts.

Brisbane

The next stop for the bus is the city of Brisbane, capital of the ´Sunshine State´ of Queensland (but where isn’t sunny in Oz?). So, what can you expect here? A vibrant nightlife with the abundance of bars and clubs, a bit of culture at the City Hall and Parliament House and the chance to get up close with some of Australia´s most well known natives at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There is so much indoor and outdoor stuff to do here that you´ll never be bored and being the biggest city in Queensland it can be a good place to stop off for some work.

Noosa

On the way from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach there is a stop off at the town of Noosa, to drop off old friends and pick up new ones. There is also a chance to have a wander around Wildhorse Mountain National Park, which provides some great photo opportunities of the gorgeous Sunshine Coast area yet something else to make those friends at home envious about!

Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island

Rainbow beach is a must-stop place to pick up the Fraser Island 4 x 4 tour. This unique site, the largest sand island in the world, will blow your mind with its beauty  pristine white sand beaches, freshwater lakes and the world´s only sand-dwelling rainforest. This is definitely one you can tick off the ´100 places to visit before you die´ list. Not only does the trip include two nights´ accommodation at Noosa Backpackers, but also two nights camping under the stars, a chance to drive across the endless sands and the opportunity to meet some dingoes (human or canine depends on who is in your group!) Back at Rainbow Beach you can indulge in some more close encounters of the animal kind (we´re talking marine life here) with the opportunity to feed the dolphins. Plus you can meet some new trip recruits at the Noosa hostel stop.

Rainbow Beach to 1770 Sector

After pick-ups and drop-offs at Noosa the bus continues on to the towns of Childers and Bundaberg, which are the ideal place to stop off and replenish your dosh by doing some fruit picking. It´s pretty hard work but well worth it to make sure you’ve got enough funds for extra activities and partying. However, don´t go too mad on the Bundaberg Rum, or Bundy as it´s known, otherwise that fruit picking will be twice as hard! The next opportunity for stopping off and chilling out for a few days is the gorgeous little seaside village of 1770. If you want to spend a bit of time relaxing on golden sands and dipping your toes in the crystal clear turquoise water of the Coral Sea, then this is the place for you. There is still a ton of fun activities coming up on the trip so make sure you recharge your batteries so you can make the most of it! 1770 to Airlie Beach Sector

Airlie Beach a highlight of the trip  the Whitsundays cruise.

The three night package here includes two nights at the cool Nomads hostel and one night/two days sailing, giving you the chance to experience these unbelievable islands beaches, rainforest, unusual marine life and a party-to-remember. This will take you to Whitehaven beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Airlie Beach to Cairns Sector

Townsville

The beach theme continues in Townsville, where you´ll be staying at one of the best hostels (own expense), right on the gorgeous sand, or on stunning Magnetic Island just off the coast. This is the sunniest spot on the Queensland coast, so you can make the most of the outdoor activities swimming, snorkelling, hiking, koala spotting or just chilling out with your mates. There is plenty going on at the hostel and when it comes to night-time entertainment look out for the full moon parties definitely something to remember (or not!).

Mission Beach

White sand beaches, lush rainforest and activities galore await you at the paradise hideaway of Mission Beach. A few days here can be as sedate or adrenaline filled as you choose and if you didn’t take advantage of the skydive option in Byron Bay, now´s your chance! You won´t get a better view of the area and long after you touch down on the ground your euphoria levels will still be sky high. Mission Beach is also home to the impressive Cassowary, a huge flightless bird with very big claws, a sharp beak and bad-ass attitude you might not want to get too close, but they are certainly a sight to see.

Cairns Adrenaline Overload

You wouldn´t be in Oz if the last part of your ultimate adventure didn´t finish with a bang and that´s exactly what you get with the five night Adrenaline Overload tour! You´ll start by checking in to your accommodation at the Cairns hostel and getting to know your dorm mates in the bar before finding out from your guide exactly what you´ll be up to over the next few days.

Jungle Tour

You could settle in with a relaxing tour of the Daintree Rainforest, river cruise and visit to Mossman Gorge. The rainforest is unique in that it grows right down to the water´s edge and is one of the most complex ecosystems on earth, containing an abundance of Australian plant and wildlife, including the Idiot Fruit (honestly, we´re not kidding!). Ok, biology lesson over.

Tully River

If you´ve been a bit shy getting to know your dorm mates then getting thrown around in an inflatable raft whilst being pounded with foamy water is the perfect way to break the ice! Your Tully River trip is a full day that includes hostel pick-up/drop off, BBQ lunch, highly experienced guides and up to 5 hours rafting, not to mention other activities such as rock jumping, rapid swimming, and raft surfing. You won´t go home dry but you will be on a high!

Great Barrier Reef

You can´t visit Oz and not visit the world famous Great Barrier Reef, and as trips go the Passions of Paradise tour is the best on offer. Dates are flexible and there are daily sailings, so you can fit this in when you choose. You may have seen images of this amazing natural attraction in books or on TV, but nothing can prepare you for seeing it in real life   exotic marine life, colourful coral gardens, and stunning views all around will take your breath away almost as much as the skydiving! If snorkeling isn´t enough for you, you could always use some of your hard earned cash (or the bank of mum and Dad!) to take a diving trip.

Diving Options

If you want to do the Great Barrier Reef in style we strongly suggest you do a live aboard on the outer reef. You have 2 options to upgrade. If you are already an open water (or higher diving certification) qualified diver you can do an 11 dive live aboard trip.

If you do not hold an existing diving qualification, you will need to do your open water course which can be incorporated into the live aboard trip. This involves doing 9 dives on the outer reef. Please see the pricing section for the different costs of the upgrades.

Finally

The minimum amount of time you need to complete this trip is 5 weeks, although you can FastTrack your travel through sectors by jumping on a Greyhound (they also run Oz experience so you can use both services) which is ideal if you only have a short amount of time before college or university, but you can take up to six months if you want to make it more of a gap year travel a bit, work a bit, etc.

One thing to remember is that drives are very long, Australia is enormous and the bus might not go every day, so double check the schedules and be prepared to supplement some of the Oz experience sectors with greyhounds if you are in a rush.

However you decide to do it this really is the trip of a lifetime and one that we think is a life changer you might leave home a nervous, first-time traveler, but you´ll return a daring adventurer with more friends than you could have imagined!

Standard Travel Option Vs The Boomerang

Most people start in Sydney and then travel up the East Coast to Cairns, some people like to add in work and travel to their trip and they figure Sydney is a good place to look for work. For this reason we also offer the boomerang option which means after the surf tour you return to Sydney (instead of being dropped off at Byron Bay) where you can start to look for work. When you are ready to travel up the coast you then start your Oz experience Bruce pass and continue the journey once more. The boomerang option is a little bit more expensive because you will cover a much greater distance and require a more expensive Oz experience pass. Checked the prices tab for details. Please note we cannot upgrade you once you have booked so you need to notify us at the time of booking if you require the boomerang option.

Will there always be others on the tour?

Yes, there will, although you may not be travelling with exactly the same people that the entire duration of the journey. You start off with your 3 nights stay in Sydney followed by the amazing 5 day surf trip. There are normally between 20 and 40 young travellers on the surf trip. From then on you have 1 party night and accommodation in Byron Bay. In Byron you are on the Flexible bus pass, so you will be travelling with other groups as you complete the journey.

The East coast of Australia is very social, so don’t worry you will make loads of new friends guaranteed.

After the surf tour you will stay one night in a flash Packers in Byron Bay, this is where you will sit down at the travel desk and collect your vouchers for your remaining activities. This is also a great place to do your skydive, although many people also opt to do this in mission beach.

Your first eight nights accommodation are already arranged for you, this lasts until Byron Bay at which point you are able to pre-book further accommodation or just see how you go. We recommend you play it by ear because you will talk to others, get tips, read cool stuff, find deals etc on route.

No, 21 nights accommodation is included but you will need to book extra

There is no need to take a lot of cash as there are ATM’s everywhere we stop. Payments can be done in cash or by card. during your arrival package assistance can be given the you to set up a bank account as well so you might want to transfer money into an Australian bank to save on international bank fees.

The amount of money you need depends on how long you go and if you wish to go out a lot etc.

Here we have listed some costs (prices are an indication and may vary due to change in currency rates).

Dorm accommodation will cost about £10 to £15.

Meals are about £5 to £15, but you always have the possibility to cook in the big kitchens of the hostels. This is also a fun way to get to know other people. You will be cooking side to side, most people make spaghetti 🙂

Drinks: a beer will be £2 and wine will be about £3 to £5. But there are always lots of backpacker bars and happy hours. We know what you like.

Money for extra activities along the way. Out of experience we know it is better to book all you definitely want to do up front, because otherwise you spend it on drinks and you will fail to be able to do all the exiting stuff.

You have 12 months to complete the trip and in total there are 21 nights of accommodation included in all the activities.

The course consists of four components. The course is for novices so don’t worry if you have no previous  experience  of sailing.

Starts each Monday, departing Abel Point Marina at 9:00am.

Week 1:

Training takes place on our NSCV (National Standards for Commercial Vessels) registered boat, where you will live aboard for five nights and six days, undergoing theory and practical application, while sailing around the Whitsunday Islands.
Includes: All meals on board, course notes, tuition, snorkelling instruction and equipment, marine and national park fees, training record log books and certificates.

Weeks 2 & 3:

Twelve nights on sailing tours, comprising of six, two day two night, Maxi Sailing tours around the Whitsundays as an extra crew member aboard our charter yachts. Trainees will be rostered on the yachts and get to work with professional crews, reinforcing the theory, plus learning other customer service aspects of working on charter yachts.

Plus

Six nights backpackers dorm/shared accommodation in Airlie Beach to be used for nights in between tours when not at sea.

The programme is specifically tailored and managed all the way through from Day 1 to Day 23.
With an additional two weeks of consolidation training specifically to practice the theory/skills learned from the first week, the programme is geared towards getting the  participants ready to work on the ultra high specification Maxi yacht favoured in the Whitsundays.

  • The first week is undertaken on a smaller yacht, learning the basics in a safe environment before moving to the Maxi yachts.
  • Weeks two and three take in all the other aspects of working on the Maxi, including managing guests, snorkelling watches, guided island walks, re-provisioning, turning vessels and refuelling.

On this programme you will receive two full crew uniforms, and six nights accommodation in Airlie Beach. This is a fully managed programme from day one, our team will manage the 23 day schedule for you:   rostering on the yachts, booking in accommodation and dealing with operational aspects for the participants.

Itinerary for the learn to earn course:

Day 1: Sunday, Check in and  pick up all of your course materials and at 4 PM you meet at the boat. You will be sleeping on board tonight ready to start your training course in the morning.

Day 2- 6: Your sale training crew course will run from day to all the way through to day six. This is a crash course detailing everything you need to know about being a competent crew person on board a boat. You learn about marine rope work and knots, your handling under power and sail. We include all of the essential boating information you need including rules and regulations, planning preparing the yacht for a safe trip handling sales, and safe operation of the yacht at sea. You will learn about avoiding and managing emergencies and general information on etiquette as well.

Day 7 Saturday: if you are booked on the advanced course you will do your speed boat licence today. Please note you will need to provide for your own meals today. If you are enrolled on the basic program, you get a day off to enjoy rarely beach. Head down to the lagoon and take a swim and kick back and relax in this awesome backpacker spot. Tonight you will be staying in a hostel.

Day 8 Sunday is taken off, you will need to provide for your own meals. At 4 PM it’s time to meet in the marina is tonight you will be staying on board.

Day 9 – 13: This week you will gain practical experience reinforcing the knowledge you learnt on your course the previous week. You will be crewing on boats so be expected to get your hands dirty and participate as a genuine crewmember. It can be hard sometimes dirty work, but it’s all about mucking in. This is your time to shine and show enthusiasm, because employment is not guaranteed at the end of the course, but usually those who show a lot of promise during this section the trip get selected first for a full-time crew position.

Day 14: Saturday. Can be spent at your leisure enjoying Airlie beach. You will need to provide your own meals today. Tonight you’ll be staying in the hostel.

Day 15 -16 Sunday- Monday: Yu will gain experience sailing on a large Maxi Yacht.

Day 17: Tuesday you will finish the maxi trip at 1 PM and head back to the hostel. You will need to provide your own meals today.

Day 18-19: Again you will go out on a maxi sailing vessel. Reinforcing what you have learnt over the previous weeks.

Day 20: at 1 PM on Friday the boat will dock and you have the rest of the afternoon off.

Day 21-22: Back out on the boats on Saturday for another sailing trip. This will be the final one prior to the course ending.

Day 23: Monday the boat docks at around 1 PM on day 23. Check out at the office, and sit down with them to discuss next steps on finding employment. You will need to provide your own meals on day 23.

Man, that cup of coffee will taste good in the morning as you watch the sunrise over the ocean…

All of the different courses start in Airlie Beach at Abel Point Marina. This is where you will receive a comprehensive orientation and safety briefing prior to heading out into the tropical waters for your training.

This certificate gives you the skills to command your own PRIVATE vessel. The International Crew Certificate and documents (IYT) requires a local payment of AUD$100, not included in the price.

Note: If you already have sailing certificates, we can adjust the programme for you.

Finding work after the course

We have 80 operational crew working on the fleet of 16 vessels who work with us in the Whitsundays. Approximately  20% of these crew positions are filled by graduates of this programme. Only 4 spaces are available on this course per month.

It is difficult to predict when crew will be moving onto another location or job or switching to other boats in the Whitsundays, but typically staff move on after 3 to 6 months.

This is very important: We DO NOT guarantee work, however, if you are diligent and punctual, attend work neat and tidy, get good results and reports from the Skippers and Crew you work with, the odds of employment improve.

You may have to wait a while for a vacancy as we cannot predict when crew will move on to create vacancies. You are welcome to seek work with other Whitsunday operators who will be looking for the same skills. We also monitor the number of applicants starting the program, and do at times block out spots if we think too many are starting.

During December the crew numbers leaving does tend to increase, creating more vacancies. It is important to note that we encourage the students who have finished the course, that they are welcome to seek work with other companies in Airlie Beach, and our operational managers do speak to the other companies regularly regarding staffing and employments.

What does the job include

The job typically includes most accommodation and food, and you can be paid up to $500 a week. Imagine spending your time cruising one of the worlds most beautiful locations and have no living expenses and getting paid!
Many gap year students end up working for a few months, saving up a boat load of cash and then travelling further.

Who joins?

The sailing course is open to anyone over the age of 18. It is perfect if you are seeking a career in marine tourism (read living on various cool yachts, sailing the around one of the world’s best marine parks in the eternal sunshine of Australia!). You do not need any prior experience if you want to join the full 23 day course.

Accommodation

During the course you will be spending five days a week on the boat you are training on in shared (two persons) accommodation. You will be staying with someone of the same sex, unless you are a couple of course!

During the weekends you will stay in a nice hostel in Airlie beach. A young and vibrant little town, with plenty going on for when you are not working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes and no! Work on the commercial charter yachts can be pretty tough: provisioning the yacht, assisting guests, assisting with cleaning, working the decks, assisting the cook. However, if you are energetic and don’t mind getting involved, you will love it.
On the course all meals and linen are provided. All you need to bring is your swim gear, sun screen, clothing, a hat and sunglasses. As you will be spending the entire day on the water, you better also bring a t-shirt with long sleeves  so not to get sun burnt. When you are going in the Australian autumn or winter, you might need a jacket too.
If you wish to continue work in the industry your logbook is enough proof of education. You will need to continue getting this signed off as you work, this is proof of on-going training and/or experience also. The log book is a legal document.   An international certificate as such is not existent, you need to present your logbook.
This is not an advanced course as training to be a skipper/master of a vessel does require ongoing experience and training. This is a fantastic way to start a career in the marine industry.
By taking this course you are given priority for when jobs arise in the fleet. There are other shorter courses on offer providing similar qualifications. However, anyone who has done a sailing course on a small boat (say 25 to 45ft) would soon quickly realise that working on a Maxi is a whole new ball game. The rigging is different, the loads are different, you have coffee grinder winches, multiple winches working together and these yachts can really cause harm if people are not familiar, trained and experienced. This programme gives you experience on the big yachts and greatly increases your employment prospects.
Airlie Beach is really popular, and for good reasons too.
When you head out from Europe to do the Whitsundays as your first Australian adventure, the best place to fly into is Cairns or Brisbane. You can take the bus to Airlie Beach, around 600km from Cairns and 1,100km from Brisbane. Check out the Oz Experience bus pass and see some of Australia on your way…..When you are already in Sydney there are two options. The fastest is to fly from Sydney via Hamilton Island to Airlie Beach (around 120GBP one way). Airlie Beach has only got an airport for internal flights.    For your information Sydney to Airlie Beach is around 1,900km.
The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around   £170, which is the equivalent of €215. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore you need to have  around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.
Yes, you can undertake the 23 day programme. If you do not have a Working Holiday Visa, you cannot apply for a job with us at the end of the course. Some guests have done this course because they saw it as a good way to spend three weeks.
Unfortunately we  are not affiliated with the RYA, so we would not employ someone with any of the RYA qualifications, for example the RYA Day Skipper Qualification. So, in order to be able to obtain a job with us you have to do the course.

Hit the open road in Australia and you won’t regret it.

Depending on what pass you pick you will visit various destinations. So below we have included some information on some popular locations in Australia they may or may not be relevant to your pass. If you need help or advice planning on where to go just chat to one of our team and we can give you the lowdown of what pass is right for you.

Itinerary In Detail

Sydney to Surf Camp

The first section of the Oz Experience Bruce Pass heads from Sydney to The Surf Camp, you can stop at Coffs Harbour, but the real action is in Byron Bay.

Byron Bay to Rainbow Beach Sector

See them all in detail here.

Byron Bay

This section of the trip begins with some time spent in Byron Bay, chilling out and soaking up the bohemian lifestyle. However, if that sounds a little too sedate for you then you can take advantage of the skydive which can be included in your trip it might only take a few minutes to get from 11,000 feet to the ground but the adrenaline rush will last so much longer!

Nimbin

An optional day trip to Nimbin is the perfect antidote to too much excitement (is that even possible?!). Nimbin day trip is not included in the price.

Surfers Paradise

The next part of the bus trip takes you from Byron Bay north to Surfers Paradise  aptly named due to the 3km golden sand beach, right on the Pacific Ocean.

Brisbane

The next stop for the bus is the city of Brisbane, capital of the ´Sunshine State´ of Queensland (but where isn´t sunny in Oz?).

Back at Rainbow Beach you can indulge in some more close encounters of the animal kind (we´re talking marine life here) with the opportunity to feed the dolphins. Plus you can meet some new trip recruits at the Hervey Bay hostel stop.

Rainbow Beach to 1770 Sector

Bundaberg

After pick-ups and drop-offs at Hervey Bay the bus continues on to the towns of Childers and Bundaberg, which are the ideal place to stop off and replenish your dosh by doing some fruit picking. It´s pretty hard work but well worth it to make sure you´ve got enough funds for extra activities and partying.

Airlie Beach

There are quite a few miles to cover to Airlie Beach so on the way there might be a stop-off at the town of Sarina for a game of barefoot lawn bowls (your guide will want to show off their skills!) before continuing onto the beachside party town of Airlie Beach and a highlight of any east coast trip  a Whitsundays cruise. (Optional Extra).

Airlie Beach to Cairns Sector

Townsville

The beach theme continues in Townsville, where you´ll be staying at one of the best hostels, right on the gorgeous sand, or on stunning Magnetic Island just off the coast (own expense). This is the sunniest spot on the Queensland coast, so you can make the most of the outdoor activities  swimming, snorkelling, hiking, koala spotting or just chilling out with your mates. There is plenty going on at Base Backpackers and when it comes to night-time entertainment look out for the full moon parties definitely something to remember (or not!).

Cairns Sector

You wouldn´t be in Oz if the last part of your Australia adventure didn´t finish with a bang and that´s exactly what you get with the five night Adrenaline Overload tour in Cairns. This is not included, but well worth adding it in to your itinerary!

Accommodation

Accommodation and meals are not included in the pass prices.

This total flexibility is what makes it so unique. When travelling in remote or outback regions where accommodation is minimal (or non existent) and there´s not a supermarket in sight, a ´Local Payment´ will be charged to you. This is paid to the local partners directly to cover meals and/or accommodation and, in some instances, national park fees. This will be collected in Australia, in Aussie dollars. There are some stopovers included in this pass, but there is a local payment for these stopovers.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

Please call us to book the make arrangements for the next available bus

The Oz Experience bus will only travel as far as one overnight stop to another in one day. This being so you will have to stay at least one night at each overnight stop. You can of course get off the bus between these overnight stops as per the Timetable.

It depends on how long and where you are travelling and also on what optional activities you might wish to do. Backpacker hostel dorm accommodation averages approx AUD$25 a night (more peak times and depending on the location). Depending on your appetite you might spend up to AUD$20 a day on food. Activities all vary in price but allow for skydiving, bungee jumping, zorbing, rafting and Fraser Island safari and Whitsunday sailing expenditure. The smart move is to book it all before you go meaning you will then be able to enjoy the social stuff with out worrying about having to watch your cash so much, saving up for the activities. The Ultimate Australia is the perfect choice or the Cairns Adrenaline Overload if you are on more of a budget.

Yes, so long as there is enough space. Normally the luggage limit is 15kg. We can´t guarantee the space, but we make every effort to accommodate people like you with a surfboard. The best thing to do is advise Reservations by phone that you will be bringing a surfboard before you start travelling and when you book on the bus for each sector of your travels.

It is a good idea to be as organised as possible so you can allow enough time to get off the bus and spend time doing the things you want. We can show you the rest with the inclusions in your pass. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment in busy times at least 3 days.

Oz Experience drops off at selected backpacker hostels. These tend to be better known backpacker hostels which are popular with all travellers and are reliable suppliers of accommodation.

Every pass has a “minimum recommended trip time”. This is the minimum amount of time we think you should allow to travel on a particular pass so you have enough time to get off the bus and stay longer at key places and do optional activities that you want to thus making the most of Oz Experience. Of course, you could travel faster than the minimum but you wont have much time off the bus. And you could take longer longer, up to 6 months. The avaerage time taken is 2 weeks but we would not recommend this. Add more into your itinerary (ask us for your options) and you will make the trip way better.

Your pass is valid for 180 days.

Yes. Trips run in both directions, north and southbound. Simply switch the stops on the itinerary and you´ll be laughing. See our website for full itineraries in all directions.

Sturdy walking shoes (ankle high), hat & sunscreen, towel & toiletries, swimming gear, warm clothing (including waterproof jacket and pants for southerly routes in winter), water bottle, torch, insect repellent, camera, film, money for some meals and optional activities.

No, but it helps! You will learn to surf in water where you can always stand up. You will be accompanied by an accredited surf instructor with full first aid qualifications.

No. You´ll end up with a couple of different guides and groups throughout your trip, but hey, you get to meet loads of great people this way! If you do make a group of mates along the way and would like to keep travelling together, you´ll all need to book well in advance. (But there are no guarantees we can fit you on the same tour.)

Yes, you can get OFF anywhere on our route (subject to there being a safe place to stop on the road. Often it is illegal to drop people at motorways/freeways/autobahns). However, you can only get back ON at the designated pick up times and places on our timetable.

Full itinerary week 1

The itinerary for the 1st week is structured to make sure your first week down under is jam packed with the best activities Sydney has to offer. What´s more, accommodation and many meals are included, along with great company and dedicated expert guides for practical support and, of course, to help you milk the most out of every experience along the way.

Meet Your Mates On Monday

Straight from the plane, you drop into the Xtreme Gap base in Sydney, where you´ll meet up with all the other arrivals. For many this is the start of long friendships, that last for the duration of Gap time in Oz and beyond, so it´s super exciting to see everyone meet.

You´ll get an introductory session from your guides, who´ll let you know everything about the practicalities of being in Oz and what you can expect from the first week with us in Sydney. It´s low-key and fun, and everyone´s excited to get going, but before we do, you´ll also get all the arrival admin out the way. This is sorted by us before you get here and includes bank cards, mobile SIMs and tax numbers; all the requirements to set you up for your stay in Oz, beyond your Sydney experience.

From here it´s straight into the city, for a full and comprehensive tour of all the major sights. You´ll see all the fantastic architecture of the Sydney Harbour  from the iconic Opera House, to the formidable steel curves of the Harbour Bridge. Then, it´s on to the Royal Botanical Gardens, where the multitude of Australian fauna blooms in the shadow of the city´s looming skyscrapers.

In the night, you can unwind with a meal and a drink on us, getting to know your fellow travellers late into the Australian night.

Explore Sydney On Tuesday

After an early start, the Xtreme Gap crew give the whole group a comprehensive introduction to all the ins and outs of working and living in Australia. These guys really are in the know, with first-hand experience of Gapping in Oz, so they have all the answers for what´s what when it comes to setting up camp here.

Afterwards, the focus of Tuesday is all about adventure and exploration. We´ll take you on a Harbour cruise to show you the city sights from a whole new perspective and we´ll delve deeper into the New South Wales cityscape by adventuring to Fort Dennison (a prison-cum-lighthouse glowering over the bays downstream from the Sydney harbour), Luna Park and Watson´s Bay in Woollahra (where the sandstone cliff peninsulas jut dramatically into the ocean).

In between seeing the sights you can swim in the warm waters of the coastline that straddles the harbour, take photos, or just chill in the Sydney sun as you please.

Wildlife and Wild Land On Wednesday

Wednesday sees us get out of the metropolitan centre of Sydney and into the New South Wales wildlife. The Xtreme Gap basecamp is an area of 6 acres, covered in rich rainforest fauna and home to a myriad of very Australian critters. We set off early from town, to let you get the most of this different setting, where you´ll stay for the next three days and two nights.

Relax in the day in the company of Josie the Kangaroo, or go wildlife spotting to try and catch a glimpse of some koalas, echidnas or possums in the forest, or dolphins and whales in the nearby coastline shallows (the sea is just 5 minutes´ walk from the basecamp!).

After an evening swim watching the Aussie sun dip below the horizon, it´s pizza night at the basecamp!

Thrilling Thursday

We start Thursday with some adrenaline pumping sand boarding in the nearby dunes. We get up in the 4x4s and ride back down again, so there´s no dune here too high to conquer!

After everyone´s had their fill, it´s of for an adventure filled bush walk, guided by the Xtreme Gap crew. There´s loads of wildlife to see, and the walk ends on one of New South Wales´ best lookout spots, where there´s a chance to take photos and go Koala spotting (here, families are observable the entire year round!). Then, as the sunlight fades and night creeps in, we light the BBQ in true Aussie fashion, and chill out around the campfire into the early hours.

Party Boat Cruise on Frickin Awesome Friday

Friday´s a real high-point. The Xtreme Gap crew launch our very own boat and everyone gets up close and personal with the rich marine life of the New South Wales seas.

Aside from the bucket list beating dolphin spotting (when you´ll also have a chance to sit in the boom net while dolphins glide through the water below you), it´s also possible to spot whales in the water here.

The bonus here is that you´ll be on board your very own private boat, with just your guides and fellow gappers as company. We´re in full control of where we go, and we can explore the waters as we please; there really is no better way to experience this amazing place.

After the cruise we depart for Sydney and arrive at the highly rated WakeUp hostel. With a central location and a great selection of nightly entertainments, it´s a great way to get back into ´city mode´ and enjoy the Sydney night in style.

Shindig Saturday

While the daytime may all be about chilling and getting some hard-earned rest, the night time is about donning your dresses and brushing up nice. We meet in the early evening at one of the city´s best bars, where backpackers and locals enjoy the famous Australian beers, and gear themselves up for a night on the town.

From here, we get hedonistic on the Xtreme Gap Sydney Pub Crawl. With entry and drinks at 4 bars and clubs included, you´ll experience all the facets of nightlife that has made this city so famous.

Leaving Sydney on Sunday

We’ll arrange your train journey to Tamworth, NSW where you’ll spend a night before starting your Ranch Course. Get to meet others in your group. Your accommodation is pre-arranged. The following morning, our rep will meet you at reception and take you to the farm.

Part 2: Work on a Ranch in Australia

What can you expect to be doing this second week?

Horse Riding & Handling

Learn how to ride on horseback, and gain knowledge and skills needed for general horse handling and care. Be introduced to the way of Natural Horsemanship, learn how horses think and communicate with them. Take the horses for a swim in a local swimming hole (in the warmer months).

What is Natural Horsemanship?

Natural Horsemanship mainly focuses on the horse expect of farming, with an alternative way of “controlling” the horse.

Natural Horsemanship is about learning how the horse thinks and communicating with the horse using the horses own language. It’s about creating a relationship between you and the horse where your horse does things for you because he wants to, not because he is forced to. A partnership where both parties have responsibilities to the other and from this deep trust is developed where the horse accepts you and looks to you for leadership. This allows humans to enjoy a lot better partnership with their horse.

Lassoing

The lasso is used today in rodeos as part of the competitive events, such as calf roping and team roping. It is also still used on working ranches to capture cattle or other livestock when necessary. You will learn to catch cattle with a lasso and have competitions with your fellow students.

Cattle Mustering

We’ll muster cattle from the paddocks to the yard. Assist with stock work such as drenching and tagging. A muster is the process of gathering livestock and usually involve cattle, sheep or horses, but may also include goats, camels, buffalo or other animals.

Fencing

Fencing is one of the most important pieces of farm infrastructure and our instructors will show you how to install and maintain fences. A properly installed fence will keep livestock/pets safe and secured and will keep any unwanted visitors outside the property.

Sheep Shearing

On Aussie farms, shearing is generally carried out in the spring, so sheep don’t become overheated in the summer. A long fleece is likely to become dirty and drag along the ground, decreasing the mobility of sheep. During your course, you will shear a sheep and learn about sheep health and husbandry.
