Itinerary

Divemaster internship Honduras (14)There is no set itinerary during a Divemaster course, each day is different with different dive sites and different things to learn depending on which stage of your Divemaster internship you are at. Typically a day would involve waking up bright and early, pack equipment jumping on the boat and then going for a spectacular dive before breakfast, some days you will be shadowing instructors, other days taking clients the dive is leading them through the dive sites and giving them their pre-dive safety briefings, and of course there is some theory and study about the safety of diving and everything you need to learn to become a Divemaster.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

The diving on UtilA is some of the best found on the planet, with over 40 dive sites, wreck dives, lots of marine life (including dolphins!), walls and shore dives. Why you should become a Divemaster and train in the Caribbean:

  • If you want to scuba dive every day in the Caribbean sea
  • If you would like to learn a new profession that you can practice all over the world
  • If you would like to be around like-minded people who want to broaden their horizon and have FUN
  • If you want to dive beautiful dive sites
  • If you want to become a professional diver and learn all there is to know during a Divemaster internship
  • If you want to learn more and become a Dive instructor, you have to start with your Divemaster, and Utila is a great place to do it.
You need to be a confident swimmer and at least 18 years old. Furthermore, you have pass the check for the health requirements before arriving to make sure that you are OK to dive.
Officially you need 40 logged dives to start the DM course and 60 to get certified. As soon as you get here we will get you diving and once we know you are comfortable in the water you can start helping out on dives, staying shallower with less experienced divers, while the instructor goes deeper but within sight, or staying with divers who use a lot of air so you can take them up when they get low on air. If you are not studying or completing assignments you will be diving, probably 1 or 2 dives a day.
All diving equipment is included for ow, aow, rescue and EFR, but when you start your Divemaster we provide use of BCD/regulator/weights/tanks but expect Divemaster candidates to have their own mask/snorkel, fins, dive computer, SMB, wetsuit, dive light. We can offer a special rate for this.
You can do the Utila Dive Master Course all year round. March through to November is the dry season, but even in the rainy season, you can come as we do not get much rain. You can expect busy times during Christmas and cheap flights in November.
Yes, the price includes accommodation. Please check the included section to see what is all included in the price.
For the course we quite often have 2 or 3 Divemaster trainees at the same time. If not, there are always other divers at the location. They are also very into diving and you will have lots of fun with them!

We suggest that you have at least $200 – $300 spending money a week for food, drink and personal expenses. Meals out are $5 – $30 depending on the restaurants. If you buy food and cook you can obviously live more cheaply.

First of all, we cannot be held responsible for information on vaccinations and visa ´s as rules do change.

Most people from the UK receive 90 days upon arrival that can then be extended for a further 30 days with a quick day trip to the mainland.

First of all, we cannot be held responsible for information on vaccinations and visa ´s as rules do change. Before visiting , you need to get vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases you might be at risk for at your destination: (Note: Your doctor or health-care provider will determine what you will need, depending on factors such as your health and immunization history, areas of the country you will be visiting, and planned activities.) To have the most benefit, see a health-care provider at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to allow time for your vaccines to take effect and to start taking medicine to prevent malaria, if you need it. Even if you have less than 4 weeks before you leave, you should still see a health-care provider for needed vaccines, anti-malaria drugs and other medications and information about how to protect yourself from illness and injury while travelling.

Zero  To Hero Or Custom Made

Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (9)Most people start the Zero  to Hero course. This takes you through all of the PADI diving certification is up to Divemaster.

  • Open water (The basic beginner course certifies you to 18 m – Usually takes 3 to 4 days)
  • Advanced open water (Qualifies you to a deeper limit of 30 m- Usually takes 2 1/2 days)
  • Rescue diver (Gains your qualification that enables you to rescue distressed divers and improves your safety knowledge)
  • Divemaster course (The rest of your time spent will be completing the Divemaster course, set over several modules the goal is to reach your certification which is a professional level)

Why do your Divemaster course in Playa del Carmen?

There are many reasons to do your Divemaster internship in Playa del Carmen. The location is extremely easy to get to, and highly rewarding once you are there. Underwater you are in for a treat, crystal clear turquoise water, with incredible marine life. This is one of the worlds top locations to see whale sharks, at certain times of year you have huge bull shark populations as well (Nov – March).

Year round the water is warm and the visibility is great.

When you are not in the water there is plenty to do, incredible white sandy beaches famed for being some of the best in the world, cool beach bars and warm Mexican hospitality.

There’s usually something going on in Playa del Carmen, not that you have to go out every night if you don’t want to. The hostel is the perfect sanctuary for those wishing to escape the madness, although no doubt you will want party a fair amount as this is a great reason to choose this location.

You don’t have to be a party animal though. Beach lovers will be completely at home here, some of the best beaches in Mexico are at your disposal. After all this is the Caribbean!

Diving in Playa del Carmen

Mexico Divemaster Diving Course (11)A great reason to do your Divemaster in Mexico, and go diving in Playa del Carmen in particular is because of the quality of the dive sites. In general the reefs are very healthy, and there’s a lot of biodiversity underwater. In general the visibility is very good, sometimes when there is a storm this might stir things up a bit, but when you compare it to places like Thailand the actual quality of diving is much more superior in our opinion.

This is a major breeding grounds the turtles, and you can see this when diving. Huge loggerhead turtles and green turtle populations always make dives interesting. But one of the most fun things about diving in Playa del Carmen, is the drift diving.

Because there is a significant current runs along the peninsular with the tides, in general you will drop in at one insertion point and not have to fin for the entire duration of the dive, you can just drift along the reefs checking things out. It’s a fantastic experience. There are large walls the go down past the 30 m mark, so you can plan your dive profile accordingly.

You will see plenty of tropical fish, Nudibranches, box fish, parrotfish Moray Eels. In season the bull sharks come, very few things can give you an Xtreme buzz when diving like a bull shark.

Diving the Cenotes

Xtreme Gap Playa del Carmen Mexico (61)This part of Mexico used to be all underwater. As the sea level changed and the peninsular rose out of the water it left behind plenty of caverns caves and underground rivers known as Centotes. Officially there are over 10,000 registered but new ones being discovered all the time. This is because mainly they are based in the jungle, and the miles and miles you have impenetrable rainforest jungle surrounding the highway that connects can cocoon, to Playa del Carmen and further south to Tulum.

The Cenotes are amazing to dive. They are freshwater, with amazing light. Deep blue colours, and an almost eerie atmosphere will give you an incredible experience.

You will get the opportunity to dive a Cenote or many of them during the Divemaster course although this is an optional upgrade as cave diving is not for everyone.

You would also be able to do some specialist courses, again as an optional upgrade the PADI Bull Shark speciality course and the Cenote Speciality course as well.

Equipment

One thing that sets the dive school apart from many others is the impressive quality of the equipment. All of which is included in the course although we do recommend you bring your own dive computer.

BOLT ONS

One of the great things about doing your Divemaster in Mexico is some of the exciting bolt ons that work well with this program.  If you want to do something completely unique take advantage of some of the underground caverns and cave systems here.  With our exciting Mexico cave diving course.  This is the real deal of diving.  Cave diving is one of the most dangerous forms of diving, so do not even consider doing this until you have done your Divemaster.

Want to explore other areas in the region? The Belize underwater conservation programme is a perfect addition once you are certified. Or take advantage of the low cost and very short distance between Cancun Mexico and Cuba. The Cuba experience could be a perfect addition also.

Finally you can explore other Mexico trips which you can add on in addition to the Divemaster course.  A free diving course is a great complimentary programme.

What happens: Mozambique Divemaster

Mozambique Divemaster course (1)First off all, its about you having a great time and gaining a qualification. Diving, socialising, partying, beach time, barbecues, pool parties…. its a live style!

You will be diving with the freshest and hottest dive centre in Tofo, we possess a combined 15 years of experience diving Tofo’s world renown reefs.

There is no set itinerary for this trip but during the Divemaster programme you will be trained from PADI Open Water level to professional Divemaster. However, as a Divemaster you need to progress through different PADI training courses starting with your Open Water. This is the basic intro to scuba-diving, after this you do your Advanced Open Water (this consists of five specialist dives) and then you do your Rescue Diver course. The Rescue Diver course teaches you about diver safety, trains you to effectively rescue distressed divers, trains you how to provide CPR and first aid and administer oxygen in case of emergencies. At this point this is the last recreational level dive qualification before you go on to do your Divemaster course.

Once you start your Divemaster internship, you will be getting into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to become a professional diver. There is no day-to-day minute by minute itinerary for this section of the course, there are certain criteria that you need to fill for example a minimum number of dives (60), you will assist dive instructors on their courses, and you will take customers out for dives acting as a dive leader, providing them with pre-dive safety briefings, helping out at the dive school and dive centre. You do all this while following the PADI training syllabus that the Divemaster course requires you to complete.

Mozambique Divemaster (27)

The real beauty about doing your Divemaster course is that you get to dive a lot

This is no understatement, when you consider how expensive recreational diving can actually be, you get to dive every day, in some of the most exciting underwater environments in Africa, if not the world, and you will spend months doing this in unlimited amounts, you start to see why it is such an appealing way to spend several months, and great value too!

Enjoy everything that Tofo has to offer

During your time when you are not in the water, you assist at the dive school, this is part of the course. You will be completing an internship learning all about working in the dive industry. But off course there is time to just chill out and enjoy everything that Tofo has to offer. It certainly has that by the bucket load, relaxation and chilled out vibes.

Mozambique Divemaster course (2)When not relaxing in a hammock under a palm tree, you will go out on ocean safaris (with snorkel gear) to swim with whale sharks, and humpback whales (in season). There is the most amazing sandy beach with good surfing opportunities, ocean kayaking and horse riding too.

You might just prefer to enjoy the buzz of the backpacker lifestyle in the town, because this is quite a popular destination for backpackers (although not your typically ruined overpopulated backpacker hangout). The locals are exceptionally friendly, the cost of living there is incredibly cheap and you are going to absolutely love the lifestyle.

Dedicated Dive Instructor

You will discuss your loose itinerary with your dedicated dive instructor on arrival, and you will also be given a full briefing on what the course involves. At the end of the course you need to pass several exams (about eight of them), but these are incredibly simple providing you follow your course work!

Upon successful sign off on completion of the course, once you have paid your PADI membership fee, (direct to PADI about £80) you will be a professional Divemaster, able to work in any dive resort in the world, and earn a living in one of the most easy-going lifestyles out there. You will get your dive certificate and membership card in the post.

Accommodation

Cabin 2Accommodation is in a really funky cool dorm, and offers you the perfect opportunity to meet your travel companions. Its has 5 bunk beds, lockers, ceiling fans, extra length mattresses, mosquito netting and an ensuite bathroom.

Please take own shower and beach towels as these are not supplied. The rooms are serviced by municipal power and each has 3-point 220V power point with 2-point adapters.

Upgrades

There are also single rooms, but as you will be staying a long time with us, its not economical to book the single room. If budget is not a problem, ask us for a quote.

Varied dive sites

During your Divemaster training, you will discover a mix of hard and soft corals and abundant marine life from sharks to turtles to dolphins to whale sharks and thousands of fish. The sites vary in depth , there is little current and the water temperature is always warm, ranging from about 27C to 32C offering amazing conditions to dive everyday on your Divemaster course!

Whale sharks, long stretches of beach and a lot of diving, this is what you can expect on the PADI  Divemaster course in Mozambique. We can train you from zero to hero in 12 weeks, meaning that you can join even if you have no prior diving experience. If you do already have dive certificates we can alter the programme for you, no problem just ask us for prices.

Whale sharks, that sounds scary to me!

Mozambique Whaleshark Diving (34)Whale sharks are the most magnificent and biggest fish in the sea and they only eat plankton. They do not even have teeth. Once you spot them you will fall in love. They are gracious and beautiful, and the great thing is they love the bubbles divers make so tend to come up to you. Because their eyes are so small you have to watch it that they do not bump in to you.

The population of juvenile whale sharks in Mozambique is at the moment higher than anywhere else which means that you will likely bump in to one pretty frequently, and don’t forget you will be doing the Divemaster in one of the top dive schools with experts trained in tracking and finding whale sharks. No need to be afraid!

Become a professional diver

Being a Divemaster means you can work in the dive industry and make money with once of the best jobs in the world. You will be able to guide dives, do scuba reviews and help out in dive shops. The PADI Divemaster certificate is internationally recognised so you can work as a Divemaster anywhere in the world. As a Divemaster the dive boat, where you soak up the sun and have your morning coffee, and the sea, where you meet the corals and the fish, are your office. You will always be surrounded by happy people who are on holiday.

So why Mozambique?

In Africa you can see the big 5 on safari’s but in Mozambique, you can  Dive The Big Five.

The big five of the underwater world are:

  • Whalesharks
  • Humpback whales
  • Dolphins
  • Manta rays
  • Sea turtles

Tofu in Mozambique is where the Xtreme Gap Divemaster course takes place. Tofu is definitely one of Southern Africa’s favourite diving destinations. Even National Geographic votes Tofu in Mozambique the prime diving location for spotting whale sharks and Manta rays. Xtreme Gap works with a PADI certified diving school that has already taken on many many divers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes you can, but the reason we have not put it online is because the price is an extra 65 USD a night (Over Christmas and new year it’s even more.

Most gear, but not the dive computer, is included on a rental basis.  But since you are training to become a professional and you will be wearing your outfit daily, it is much better to have your own gear! We advise you bring your own facemask as this is a personal item and is much nicer to have your own.

You will need to pre-arranged your own VISA before joining this program. Please book well ahead to ensure you have enough time to organise your visa, and remember one to arrive in country you have to have an arrival stamp putting your passport at the airport. This is to validate the VISA.

The accommodation is about a 15 min walk from the dive school.

The weather is always a difficult subject, but the climate in Tofo is warm and sunny which can be dived year round but it can have high winds during February and August which can cause the water to become very rough and choppy, even so diving is usually still possible and it only called off in extreme conditions.

The summer months of November to April are the rainiest months which occasionally bring violent storms but they have the highest water temperature of 28C. The winter months of May to October are a lot cooler but still pleasant with a lower water temperature of 23C. Visibility in this area varies by the day and is influenced by a combination of plankton, currents, winds and tides.

There are other divers coming and going doing shorter or longer courses. As there is no set date people normally do not start on the same day. However you will meet lots of people also diving with us and you will be one of the team! No worries its super social.

Please bring an adapter suitable for South African plugs which are three pins and round you will also want Mozambique and plugs which are to pin.

At the hostel there are cooking facilities. There is a bbq area you can use to grill your own food.

The hostel is truly amazing and funky and with a stunning garden and pool! Comfy lounge areas and friendly staff! In the evening there are often dj´s playing too! Free wifi areas, laundry service, safety deposit box, a dech from where you can see the sun set over stunning tofo and a bar and restautant.

Mozambique is unfortunately a malarial zone, so you will need to take antimalarial medicine, please check with your doctor which is the most appropriate, because Malarone for example mimics symptoms of decompression sickness so you cannot use that one.

Absolutely not! They are big but they do not even have teeth. They are extremely impressive though, and being lucky to see one, and swim with one once, is never enough.

Yes you can, we will train you from zero to hero. We do recommend you take a diving medical before you leave the UK if you have any doubts as to whether you will be suited to diving.

Yes, you can. Fishing, horse rising, surfing, ocean kayaking and exploring along some of the worlds most unspoilt coastline. Not bad.

Inhambane is in a malaria zone, we advise you take malarial tablets and consult your GP or travel clinic before you go.With regards to Malaria medication our partners recommend DEMAL 200, its a British product made by Blue Turtle, and they have used it for eight years without getting malaria. Please note though we do not endorse any particular brand or product and you should consult your own GP and take your own advice and precautions as necessary.

Take malaria tablets but NOT Lariam, Mefliam or Mefloquine as these can mimic symptoms of decompression sickness and the nearest decompression chamber is in South Africa. If participants take Larium, Meflian or Mefloquine, they will be excluding themselves from the dive and there are no exceptions.
Africa may be cheap, but diving in Africa is not, well, not if you are diving with a reputable company that looks after their equipment and customers! All the dive equipment has to be brought in from South Africa, we also put you up in a nice backpacker resort, and you get  unlimited  dives. If you want the trip of a life time then you really do get what you pay for, and this is exactly that, very few other places in the world will get you this much whale shark exposure in such a beautiful setting.

The Australian Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 costs around £180, which is the equivalent of AUD$320. Rates change constantly so use this only as an indication. Furthermore, you need to have around £2,000 in your bank account when you enter Australia with a Working Holiday Visa. You will apply for a visa before you go and will do this online at the website of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of the Australian Government.

There are no extra costs in regards to the course during the time you are with us. The only other costs would be money for personal spending money, breakfast and lunch and any other personal trips they may choose to take. If you go and work as a Divemaster somewhere else in Australia, then you will be required to purchase dive insurance from PADI.

It’s a tropical paradise with amazing underwater environments, coupled with superb dive training and easy laid-back lifestyle it’s a great place to go about getting a Divemaster course.

There is no set itinerary for doing your Divemaster course, however you will have to complete different courses in the run up to doing your Divemaster:

  • Open Water Course

  • Divemaster

A Typical Day

Duties in the morning would usually revolve around greeting the costumers as they came in and fitting their equipment, fins, mask, wetsuit, weights ect.. As well as answering questions and generally chatting and joking and trying to make them feel comfortable about the upcoming dives.

After loading up all the tanks and equipment on the big F150 truck known as Mighty White its off to the boat 5 minutes away. After loading up the boat and giving the customers a briefing it is time to go diving.

There are many dive sites in Manuel Antonio National Park. Often you will be assisting the resident Divemasters, shadowing customers underwater and keeping an eye out on them. You will greatly improve your dive skills through lots of diving and on some days specific training dives with the course director Georgia.

Mapping, search and recovery, deep, rescue and navigation ect..

Some times you may do skills in the pool or studying theory or helping out around the shop.

Free Time

If there are no dives in the afternoon you will generally finish up around 2pm. Which leaves you free to go to the beach, explore rainforest trails, swim in waterfalls.. Manuel Antonio is a stunningly beautiful national park with amazing wildlife. Sloths, lizards, 3 types of monkeys, birds.

Accommodation

This Divemaster programme uses local homestay accommodation. Expect your own comfortable room, private bathroom, breakfast, lunch, dinner, free wifi and laundry service. The Homestays are located in the Manuel Antonio / Quepos Area

Manuel Antonio is located 100 miles south of San Jose on the central Pacific Coast (a pleasant 2 1/2-hour drive, or a short 20 minutes by plane), Manuel Antonio is home to a national park which was established in 1972 and is the natural habitat of species such as the endangered squirrel monkey (endemic to the area), white faced capuchin monkey, raccoons, three and two-toed sloths, white-nosed coaties, brown pelicans, black-collared hawks and green kingfishers.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

We have moved primarily toward digital materials for the courses. This to allow the students to have access to materials before they arrive if they would like, and also to make it easier for them to travel with, example for baggage limits etc. This also makes it more efficient with our timing, allowing us to spend more time in the water and less time physically in the classroom.
You will need to fly into Quepos, this is about 10 min away from the dive school you can also fly to San Jose but there is an additional US$165 pickup fee. As this is several miles away.

Dive Instructor Course Details

Where will I stay during my IDC?

You will here  in our newly built dedicated GoPro Lodge.   This is situated on the resort only a 2 minute walk to our private beach.   Built with you in mind, they are comfortable, simply furnished and with a shared bathroom. They are also on site 1 minute from classroom and diving.

When is the best time to come?

Malapascua is blessed with great diving all year round so any time is great!   Please see our website schedule setting out our dates for 2013.

How do I get to Malapascua?

It´s really easy!   Cebu, the neighbouring island, has a major international airport and from there it´s around a 3 to 4 hour journey to catch the short ferry ride to Malapascua.  We can arrange private transfers from Cebu if you wish.

Is there anything else I should know?

You will need to have a current medical certificate completed by a doctor to confirm that you are fit to dive.   As there is no resident doctor on the island I would recommend that you obtain this before you come.   We can send you the appropriate form in your chosen language for you and your doctor to complete.   It must be completed no more than 12 months prior to your Instructor Exam.

To start your IDC you need to have been a certified diver for at least 6 months, and you need to have proof of 100 logged dives before you take the IE (Instructor Exam).

Please note that the new Divemaster curriculum, which has been taught in many places since January 2011, has a different level of theory than the old curriculum and one which falls short of the level required for your IDC.   Please note that, apart from our pre-IDC prep days, dive theory is not taught as part of the PADI IDC.

If you are not sure which Divemaster course you took, it´s easy to find out if you took 8 exams then this is the old curriculum, and if you took only 2 exams then this is the new curriculum.   If you took the new curriculum, or maybe it was a long time since you took the old Divemaster course, we can give you some tips and suggestions to enable you to study and get your theory in shape before the IDC.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

The programme is 3 week, the whole IDC course takes 16 days, which includes the EFR Instructor course and prep.  This might be a day or two longer than other IDCs but means that the days are short and relaxed, giving you plenty of time to prepare your own presentations, go diving, or relax in our resort.

We pride ourselves in giving our candidates the best possible experience and that includes small groups of usually less than 6 persons which ensure you get the personal service that you should expect from your IDC.
The diving here is world renowned!   Many famous underwater photographers and film crews come to Exotic to film the thresher sharks and wide variety of macro life that can be seen year round.   So here at Exotic we can offer you a great IDC package and great diving as well!

The main reason you are choosing to start your career with PADI is no doubt because you love diving, and here we expect you to dive as much as you can throughout your course all for free!

Absolutely!   We offer all our gold package candidates a free 6 week internship, basic / silver package candidates a free 2 week internship where you can work alongside our instructors gaining valuable experience of the real world.   For gold package candidates if you would prefer to take 2 of these 6 weeks before your IDC, assisting our instructors as a Divemaster that´s no problem.

Yes you can.   Being able to teach Specialty courses gives you the chance to pursue your own interests, and can make you more employable in the process.  We offer Specialty Instructor Training Courses in a wide range of Specialties including the popular Enriched Air, Digital Underwater Photography, Deep and Wreck.   Our MSDT Preparation Program is designed to be very flexible and run alongside your 6 week internship and includes the chance to earn your first student certifications.   The Program includes 5 PADI Specialties and their appropriate training dives.   With these 5 Specialties you can apply to become a Master Scuba Diver Trainer once you have attained 25 student certifications.   If you are interested in the MSDT Prep Program, please see our  IDC Gold  package.

Once you pass the IE you will be qualified to teach all core PADI courses (Open Water/DSD to Divemaster) as well as the following Specialties:   Peak Performance Buoyancy, Project AWARE and AWARE Coral Reef Conservation

Itinerary

In order become a Divemaster you have to go through various stages. The following is an estimate of the time spent on each you need to go through to become a Divemaster. If you are already a qualified diver you can skip the courses you have already done.

Open Water course. Duration: 5 days

The Open Water Course consists of confined water training in our pool, scuba dive theory, and four open water dives at world class dive sites located around the Gilis. We have a huge variety of marine life in the area, and over the course of your four dives, you have a good chance of seeing big stuff like sharks and turtles, as well as some fascinating smaller stuff like octopus, cuttlefish, lionfish and scorpionfish.

Advanced Adventurer

The Advanced Adventurer course is designed to build on the knowledge you acquired in your Open Water course, give you new and exciting underwater experiences, and fine tune your diving skills. The course consists of five dives. Two of the dives are compulsory (the deep and navigation dives) and the other three you may choose from a variety of options, the most popular being: night dive, naturalist dive, nitrox dive, computer dive, peak performance buoyancy or photography dive. There are no quizzes, exams or videos on the advanced course it´s all about diving.

For each dive you receive an extended briefing and debrief from your instructor regarding your chosen option. Upon completion of this course you will be certified to dive to 30m.

Open Water 5 days

  • 5 nights
  • Day 1Arrive at 11am and Course Orientation at 5pm

Rescue and EFR

The rescue course is a practical and fun course, and moves your diving skills on from focusing on your own diving to being more aware of others in the water.

The Rescue Diver course is taught together with the Emergency First Response (EFR) Course. The EFR course is a short course that combines CPR and First Aid into a single course and teaches you the same internationally recognized emergency protocols used by paramedics and doctors worldwide, while recognizing that you are a lay person and keeping it simple.

The Rescue Diver course is designed to build on your skills as a diver and your newly acquired Respond Right skills by exposing you to hypothetical emergency situations in a diving environment. You will learn to refine and further develop your accident prevention and handling skills, as well as learning to manage a diving emergency if you’re ever faced with one. The course consists of theory work, videos and practical application while diving. You will learn a variety of rescue techniques so that you will be prepared to face a multitude of diving emergency situations, from assisting panicked divers both above and below the surface, to handling unconscious divers underwater and orchestrating missing diver searches.

By the end of the course you´ll feel confident that you have the skills to deal with situations if they should arise in a diving environment, which adds to your enjoyment and expertise as a diver, and is the perfect step up to the Divemaster level.

The Visa required will depend on the length of stay planned. Visa on arrival (30-days US$25) You automatically get 30-days on arrival when you enter into the country. You will need to pay for this at the airport, and it is best to bring US$ notes dated from the year 2000 onwards for the payment. Most airport immigration offices will not accept credit cards, so be prepared with the cash.

Once your first 30-days runs out you can visit the Immigration office in Lombok and apply for an additional 30-days for around $50. This involves one day spent in Lombok and a lot of Indonesia paperwork, so can be a day wasted if you are on a tight schedule! If you know you want to be here for longer than one month, then it is best to come prepared with a 60-day tourist visa.

Tourist Visa (60-days, cost depends on the Embassy where visa application is processed) For anyone planning to be here for up to 2 months, a 60-day tourist visa is definitely the easiest way to go. These visas need to be pre-arranged and collected from an embassy outside of the country before entering into Indonesia. The time taken to process the visa is usually 3 working days, and the cost will depend on which embassy you are using. You can check the latest requirements on our Visa section.

Apart from the tourist attractions like temples and waterfalls, and the usual beach activities like sunbathing and snorkeling, you can go fishing, horse riding, water skiing, wakeboarding, and there is a surf break to the south of the island for the experienced surfer. If any of you are golfers there is a fantastic 18 hole course 10 minutes away in the speed boat. It’s not a cheap day out when compared to everything else in Indonesia, but good value for western standards: transport, green fee, clubs, buggy, caddy, lunch and drinks will cost you about $100. The best thing to do on your day of is chilling as this is the island for it!

There are no police on Trawangan, however the local population have put together an equivalent organization called SATGAS. They answer to the Kepala Desa (Head of the Village) so if, for example, you lose anything they’ll be your best chance for finding it. There office is located just behind the harbour.
No, the aggressive hawkers you may have had experiences with in Bali are not allowed onto the island. However on your way to the Gilis you will possibly come via Bangsal harbour. The hawkers there will try to sell you everything from cigarettes to return tickets, telling you that these are not available on the islands. Everything they offer is available on the island and probably cheaper.

While it is perfectly safe to swim and snorkel around the Gilis you should never try to swim to the next island, it is much further than it looks and the currents in the middle of the channel can be very strong even for the best of swimmers.

There are no cars, motorbikes, in fact no motorized transport on Trewangan,so no traffic accident will happen. Everything is very close together so there’s no chance of getting lost. The locals are also very friendly and always keep an eye out, so finding staying safe will not be a problem. However just line in every country there is the hazard of getting drunk and feeling unwell. Take it easy as you will always dive the next day. The current of the sea around the Gili´s is very strong so skinny dipping after dark is also not a good idea.

On the island Visa/Mastercard, Travellers cheques, and almost any foreign currency are accepted in the western run restaurants. There is also an ATM/cash point machine on the island, however it does not accept all cards and it runs out of cash quite regularly so bring some rupiah as a back up. You can change money at the local money changers and even get cash on credit cards but the exchange rates will not be in your favour and commissions will be charged. We go to Lombok for shopping once a week and at the same time get cash from ATM’s for our customers when the machines on the island do not work.

No, despite what you may have heard there is no malaria on Gili Trawangan. Some areas in Lombok (20 minutes by boat) however are known to have it. If you have to take anti malarial medication don’t use Larium, as in about 50% of cases it produces unpleasant side effects when combined with diving.

No, you do not need to be fit to learn to free dive. Eben if you have to much body fit, have not been working out for a while and you smoke you can join and learn how to free dive.

No, this is something totally different to scuba diving. You do however need to love water, as this is where you will be spending a lot of your time!

Top Dive School

Shark Divemaster Philippines (31)We work with an extremely professional dive school on the island. One of the most established, they are credited with discovering the Thresher shark several years ago and are the only National Geographic Dive Centre on the Island.

Five Dive boats and lots of variety

We run five dive boats and are one of the busier dive schools in Malapascua. This means there are always a lot of options to dive different sites, loads of variety and plenty of customers to assist which is an important part of getting your dive master.

Studying the Thresher Sharks, Mantas and Hammerheads.

The real beauty of doing your dive master here is the Thresher shark. These are sharks with a distinctive long tail that they use to thrash the water, hence the name Thresher. No where else in the world can you see these majestic animals. Usually they live well beyond the reach of humans at around 300 metres below the surface. For some reason not yet understood, they gather off Malapascua all year and head to the top of the Monad Shoal Pinnacle, at around 23 meters. Besides that you can also see huge Manta rays swoop past and even occasional a Hammerhead.

Open Water (OW)

Shark Divemaster Philippines (30)When completing your open water course, you can expect the open water course diving course to last between 3  to 4 days. The time scale usually depends on how quick you and your group are to using the equipment. You will start with a short swim test: it is a requirement that you can swim before undertaking your open water scuba diving course. The first couple of days will be spent in the class room and swimming pool. Furthermore you will learn about the safety aspects, about the equipment and the physics of diving. This will be under the watchful eyes of your scuba diving instructor and an assistant Divemaster.

After the classroom and pool modules are completed and you have demonstrated that you are able to complete various open water diving course skills correctly (such as recovering a regulator, clearing your mask) you will be ready to continue your open water diving course in the sea! The open water diving course consists of 4 scuba dives. During these dives you will practice skills learned in the pool and get used to the underwater environment, whilst diving with incredible fish in a beautiful underwater setting. To pass the open water Scuba Diving course, you must complete an exam at the end of the course, this is not hard to pass, but you must study, or risk failure!

Advanced Open Water

Shark Divemaster Philippines (43)The PADI Advanced Open Water Certification is a natural progression once completing the PADI Open Water Course. This course is scheduled over 2 days and consists of 5 Adventure dives from the list below (2 of which must be Deep and Navigation). On completion of this exciting course you will be awarded with the Advanced Open Water Diver certification, which allows you to dive down to a depth of 30 metres. The real beauty of the advanced course is that it enables you to dive deeper to 30 metres. At this depth you can see more species. It also improves your confidence and builds on the fundamentals. If you plan to dive as a continuing hobby, then the advanced course is highly recommended.

Rescue and EFR

When completing your advanced open water course, you can complete your Rescue diver course. The rescue diver course lasts about 2 days. You also need to complete your EFR (emergency first response) course during this time. Challenging and rewarding best describe the PADI Rescue Diver course. Building upon what you have already learned, this learns you how to prevent problems, and how to manage them if they occur. If you are serious about your diving, take this course and have confidence leading dives.

Shark Divemaster Philippines (29)On the PADI Rescue diver course, you are trained how to look out for the danger singes of distressed divers. The rescue diver course also teaches you how to rescue distressed divers and search for missing divers using specific search patterns. You are also taught how to safely recover an unconscious diver from the sea bed, and administer first aid both in and out of the water, this includes giving mouth to mouth resuscitation in the water.

The rescue diver course is a pr-requisite for the Padi dive master course, however even those not considering going professional, should consider this course, especially if they are intending on diving as an on going hobby. This is a great place to do you rescue diver course, with a tropical paradise island full of divers, you will meet like minded people making the learning experience great fun.

Divemaster internship

You will be assisting a qualified Divemaster or Instructor on guiding dives. Every day you will be diving (if you wish) and learn more about the dive sites, different fish and diving skills. There are usually different departure times for dives daily. There is also the occasional night dive as well. The morning diving is very early, usually a double dive leaving at 5am. This is necessary in order to catch the Thresher sharks as they come up to the cleaning station in the early morning. You can choose to dive as little or as much as you like, just bear in mind you will need to complete a minimum number to pass your Divemaster course as set out in the PADI Divemaster qualification requirements.

Accommodation

For the duration of your stay you will be located at a comfortable dive resort, right on the beach. You can choose The rooms have a maid service and are safe, secure and clean.

You will have your own private room, but you have to share facilities (shower and toilets). All the rooms and facilities have recently been renewed.

The resort has many facilities that make it a great place to stay for you and to make sure you have everything you need nearby. The following facilities are located at the resort:

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

You can go all year round as we have nice weather on this paradise island so any time is a good time to visit Malapascua! For your information there are three distinct seasons here in Malapascua.

  • Spring from February to May,
  • Summer from June September and
  • Winter Rain Season starts from October January.

The Christmas and Easter periods are busy times on Malapascua, so once again be sure to reserve your Divemaster programme well in advance. The only holiday seasons that really affect traveling are Christmas day and the Easter weekend as most public transport stops, including airplanes. And do not forget we are also busy with Chinese New Year. July and August are officially low season but we tend to be busy with courses so for a DM would be a good time because there is plenty of opportunity to assist courses as well as guide/dive.

We can include breakfast for you, this will be GBP 7 a day. Meals on the island are between 4 and 10 USD in the little restaurants. You can get a sandwich for about 2 USD. There are many little kiosk for chocolate snacks and drinks. They are very cheap. If you go out to a bar, part of the resort, expect to pay about 2 USD for a beer.

There are few islands that can match Malapascua for a pure dreamy setting. Soft white sand encircles the island, and clear blue seas always warm invite you to explore the wrecks and dive sites located minutes from the shore. You could walk around the island, although one part is mangrove. All beaches are white sandy beaches and have palm trees. In the middle of the island you find the village where are locals life, they are truly a lovely bunch of people and the great thing is that English is ought at very school in the Philippines, so communicating will not be a problem either!

Chilling with your new friends and hanging on the beach. Walking round the island and drinking a beer. Yes life in paradise is tough indeed.

You can get to the island Cebu by boat. It takes about 30 minutes. Cebu is quite big and to get to the airport you can take a bus or arrange a taxi.

On the island there is ‘normal’ western food served, as many tourists come here to dive. There is lots of fresh sea food and noodles, chicken and pork. Even pizza and pasta. There is a very good Italian restaurant. But if you would like to try out the weird Philippines food, have a go! They serve dog, cat and snake.

They are the most amazing loving people you can imagine! The resort is run by a Dutch man, but all staff is from the (nearby) island. The dive school, which is attached to the resort, is run by an English woman and Spanish man who are both very experienced shop managers and dive instructors.

There are on average 5 Dive Master trainees at any one time gaining their Dive Master qualifications at the school. On joining you will quickly become part of the team, and once your preliminary dive training is underway (Open Water and Advanced and Rescue qualifications) you will be tasked with helping customers, leading dives and building up your dive experience.

If you are a fish, yes, but to your average scuba diver: no.

The Thresher shark is not dangerous of humans. They eat only small fish. Although, there are stories, myths at best, that fisher men were hit by the long tail of the Thresher shark after they caught them in their nets… Just be nice to them, and they will be a part of an incredible experience for you.

Learn & Earn As a Dive Instructor

It is a pretty good life style you have as a  Scuba Instructor and it is very rewarding too! You help people overcome their fear and make them feel really proud. Imagine having happy students around you every day. Of course the view from the office is pretty cool, usually the worlds best beach resorts, yes it is a tough life, but someone has to do it.

How do you become a  Scuba Instructor? Complete Your  Thailand IDC

If you are a complete novice in diving it will take you 7 months to train up to become a dive instructor, but is a pretty awesome 7 months. Why 7? Well the rules set out by PADI state you can not become a dive instructor until 6 months from your first open water qualification. If you have prior dive experience you can achieve this in far less time. So most people interested doing their IDC already have diving experience, or start with their first diving course at home.

Becoming A SCUBA Dive Instructor – Before you start

There are usually two types of people that think about becoming a PADI dive instructor. Those who already have an existing dive qualification, and others who are toying with the idea because they like the idea of a career change.

If you do not already have an existing dive qualification (open water) then it is best that you contact us first to discuss your options. It is a huge commitment becoming a dive instructor financially, as the IDC pre-required courses do not come cheap -and that’s just the courses you also have to factor in living costs prior to starting.

There are a whole host of things that you should consider prior to starting and we are able to talk you through your options from the point of view of experience. Many of our staff hold scuba-diving instructor qualifications and have completed their IDC’s. So if you want a genuine insight into what it is like to be a diving instructor and what is required to pass exams then get in touch on e-mail.

Doing Your IDC: The Process.

To become a dive instructor and work anywhere in the world, you need to complete your instructor development course aka your IDC. The instructor development course will cover all the theory and practical modules and learning you need to undertake prior to doing your IE (instructor exam). The instructor exam is overseen by an examiner from the accrediting organisation usually PADI although it is possible to gain instructor qualifications from other agencies such as SSI. The course director who runs the instructor development course (IDC) is just responsible for getting you up to the level where you will pass your instructor exam. For this reason instructor exam fees are not usually included in the cost of IDC’s as the instructor exam fees go directly to PADI.

The IDC

The IDC takes place in the pool, open ocean and classroom. Usually run once a month they are done in a group with a course director overseeing the training. The IDC’s are almost always followed directly by the IE and upon completion you can then start to look for a SCUBA dive instructor job.

The course takes 2 weeks, but we allow 4 weeks, so you can enjoy your time on this tropical island . We include fun dives, accommodation, guides, ace parties and off course all IDC training.

Training & Course Break Down

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (3)

  • Open Water
  • Advanced Open Water
  • Emergency First Response (First Aid)
  • Rescue Diver Certificate
  • Divemaster
  • EFR Instructor
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor Development Course (The IDC)
  • The Instructor Exams (fees not included)

Are The Instructor Exam Fees Included?

Zero to Hero Dive Instructor Thailand (7)No, unfortunately they are not. It is pretty expensive to become a Diving instructor, but ultimately worth it. The IDC (abbreviation for Instructor development course) includes the required training both practical and theory with a qualified course director, to get you up to the standards needed to pass the Instructor Examination. The Price of the programme covers the IDC (It also covers the accommodation and diving costs and course learning materials as well), but not the examination fees.

So please note you will need to budget at least £800 on top of the fee to Xtreme Gap to cover the extras.

Think of it like learning to drive, you are paying for the lessons, and instruction. The instructor examination fee is just that, it is the fee paid to PADI to sit and mark the exams. They send out their own examiners to mark you and certify you ensuring you are up to standards. The fee is the same regardless of where you sit the exam as these are set down by PADI based in Australia.

Now in extreme cases someone may not pass the exam, so fees are never included because it is up to you to be able to pass, this means if you failed you would have to pay the exam fee again.

We say extreme cases because our Course Director, has a 100% pass rate and is one of the longest serving course directors in Thailand. He has certified well over 1000 instructors in his career.

Trip Frequently Asked Questions

There are some extra costs not included in the price you pay us, these are fees that are payable direct to PADI to sit your exams. At the time of writing they are (in Australian Dollars):

The IE will now cost 865 AUD$ , the IDC application fee 249 AUD$ and the EFRI application fee will cost 172 AUD$ , all together adding up to 1286 AUD$.

Please note this figure is a guide and can change (it is set by PADI not Xtreme).

Yes, the Koh Tao course is adaptable. Eg. we can shorten your trip if you have existing qualifications when you start your Koh Tao  IDC  instructor course. However remember you need to have at least 6 months gap between gaining your first diving qualification (Open Water) and becoming a Dive Instructor.

To train on the Koh Tao diving course you will need to fill in a medical statement and pass a medical exam. You will definitely notice that your fitness levels improve significantly as you advance through the Koh Tao Divemaster course. Bear in mind you will be swimming for up to 4 hours, this has a great impact on your fitness and health. However before beginning the course you need to be reasonably fit and healthy. You will also need to pass a PADI instructor swim.

20 to 25 pounds a day should be enough for a great gap year. If you are not the drinking type and you like more quiet nights you could do it for 15 pounds. During the day you will only spend some money on food and water, and trust me, that is cheap!

The rooms are spacious and clean and have a nice balcony. Every room has 2 single beds, a TV and an en suite bathroom. If you want your own room during your gap year diving, there is an option for your own room for 75 euro extra a month.

The resort is part of the dive school. There is a reception, bar, restaurant with Thai and Western food, a big pool with sun beds pool, friendly reception, spacious rooms, and internet. The resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach, the bars and the restaurants.

You do not need experience. But you do need to be able to swim, not excellent, but you need to be able to swim around the dive boat. The diving in Thailand programme of Xtreme Gap gives you plenty of time, more than most programmes. But please do realize it is a big commitment so make sure you really want to do it.

We have arranged that your transfer tickets are ready at the desk of the hotel in Bangkok. The night after arriving you will get on a overnight bus and then in the morning a few hours on the boat. Also the pick up from the pier on Koh Tao on your day of arrival is included. The island is 21 square KM, and the resort is a 2 minute walk from the beach and all restaurants. So once you are on Koh Tao everything can be done by foot.

Thailand is great for a gap year because the weather is always nice. Maybe except October and November, than it is rainy season. The rest of the year it is hot and sunny! And even in the rainy season you will have lots of sunshine and hot weather.

Yes. We do never know exactly how many, but there is always an average of 5 to 12 travellers from Xtreme Gap.

Not all gap year travellers will be doing the Thailand dive programme. There are also options to do Martial arts on Koh Tao, Yoga, Free diving and rock climbing. For more gap year Thailand ideas please check our site. Everyone will stay in the same resort.

Yes. Xtreme Gap has a rep on the island that will be there for all gap year travellers. The rep will pick you up from the pier, show you around, take you out for dinner, introduce you to other gap year takers and will be there for you 24/7. Then you will also be working with your dive instructor daily. We also have an emergency number.

You can buy anything you need on Koh Tao, and it is much cheaper than back home, so pack light! The shops are all close to the resort. You can buy souvenirs, sun lotion, mosquito repellent, swim shorts, flip flops and everything else you might need.

If you are from the UK you can book gap year travel insurance online on the Xtreme Gap website. You would need the backpacker option and then the upgrade since you will be diving up to 30 meters deep during your gap year. We have chosen to work with this company since they are good value and cover the necessary diving and sports options Xtreme Gap has for gap years.

One of the benefits of booking your trip on Koh Tao with Xtreme Gap Year is not only do you get to do this awesome activity, but you will become part of the Xtreme gap family on Koh Tao. We will pick you up from the pier and give you a warm welcome at our stunning resort. On your first night our resident representative will take you out for a gorgeous Thai meal annual get to know all of the other members of the group. When you are booking a trip with us it is not just about the activity so please bear this in mind if you are comparing prices to other companies. No other company has such a big presence in Koh Tao, runs groups of like-minded travellers so booking a trip with us is as much about the friends you make as well as the experiences you will have.

The first thing we should mention is rules do change very frequently in Thailand, so this is just a guideline and you need to take responsibility for checking the accuracy. Having said that this is a question we are asked often and this is the current advice we are giving regarding visas.

Before you travel to Thailand you will need a double entry 60 day tourist VISA. This will enable you to get 60 days when you  first enter Thailand which can be extended by 30 days in Koh Samui either personally or we can send yourpassport over to our representative and they´ll do it for a fee, then at the end of that 30 days you will have to do a visa run and going over to Burma.

This is the closest place to do a VISA run, which takes place overnight you leave in the evening and you are back on Koh Tao the following morning. When you re-enter Thailand you will get the second 60 day visa activated. Once this is nearly expired this can once again be can be extended by 30 days in Samui.

This takes you to 6 months. If you are on the seven month course you will still need an additional month which requires you to do one final VISA run.

Some people from certain countries do now get 30 day tourist visas when they enter Thailand over a land boarder, the UK is one of these, but Ireland isn´t. The list of countries which now get 30 day visas when they cross a land border is;

  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • UK
  • United States.

So if you are from any of the above countries you are able to do one additional VISA run to complete the trip, if you are from other countries you may need to do to visa runs, please check with the course director to ensure that your visa runs do not interfere with the timing of the final instructor exam.
